Douglas, Salah to Compete in US Open Squash Championships

PHILADELPHIA - The number one players on both the men's and women's University of Pennsylvania squash teams will be in action this weekend. Reeham Salah and Andrew Douglas will compete in the US Open Squash Championships that will be taking place on the other side of Market Street at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.

"I'm super excited to have received the wild card for the biggest main draw of my carrer in my college town at the US Open," said Salah. "It will be such a blast to play in front of a home crowd my senior year and it means a lot to me! I'm definitely going to make the most of this opportunity."

Salah is in the midst of her most successful year to date. After winning the CSA Individual National Championship last season, she went on to make the finals in three consecutive professional tournaments at the US Nationals, Richmond Open, and Texas Open. The senior also won the Richmond Open.

The Penn senior will play 19th ranked Hania El Hammamy of Egypt in the first round. It will be a rematch of their first round match at the Texas Open back in March which was a five-game thriller that lasted 95-minutes. Salah won the first two games before El Hammamy tied the match at two games all. Salah went on to win the final game, 11-8, as she made her way to the final.

That match will take place Saturday at 4 p.m.

Douglas will go up against world No. 26 and 31-year old Mathieu Castanet in the first round. Castenet began his professional squash career back in 2005.
"I am very much looking forward to the US Open this Saturday and am immensely grateful to US Squash for giving me this invaluable experience," said Douglas. "I have been working for this event for a very long time and have had my eye on it for months. I have put in the work and have done my best to be ready. I'm looking forward to getting on that court Saturday at 4:45!"

Since the end of his freshman season in which he became just the second freshman in program history to be awarded first-team All-American and first-team All-Ivy, Douglas has boasted a runner-up finish at the US Nationals, quarterfinal finishes at the Madison Open, Hyder Trophy, and CityView Open, and then he won the Barbados Open back in June.

Douglas' first round match will take place Saturday at 4:45 p.m.
