Men's Squash Sweeps Brown, Off To Best Start Since 1985

PHILADELPHIA - For the first time in three matches, the University of Pennsylvania men's squash team (8-1, 2-0 Ivy) didn't have to wait until the final match of the day to find out whether or not they would walk away with a victory. Sunday afternoon's win came a lot earlier as the Quakers swept all nine matches against Brown to earn their fourth 9-0 victory of the season.

With the win Penn improves to 8-1 on the season which includes being 2-0 in the Ivy League. The Quakers followed up the history of defeating Yale at The Ringe for the first time since 1995 by making more history. The 8-1 start is the best start for the men's team since 1985. That season the Quakers started 10-0 before losing their final two matches and finishing third in the Ivy.

After playing three matches in five days and going 3-0 in those matches, the Quakers get five days off before they travel to Trinity next Saturday to play the number one men's squash team in the nation on the road.

*Inside the Numbers

* The Quakers defeated Brown 9-0, it marks their fourth 9-0 victory of the season.

* Penn improves to 8-1 with the win, including 2-0 in the Ivy. It marks the team's best nine match start since 1985.

* Andrew Douglas completed his seventh sweep of the season with his 3-0 victory. The freshman remains an undefeated 9-0 on the season.

* Max Reed played the only five game match of the day. It was also his first of the season. The junior came back from 1-2 down to win 3-2.

* Since starting 3-2 at the No. 2 slot, senior Hayes Murphy has settled in. Murphy won the final two games of his match against Brown to win 3-1 and give him his fourth straight win. He is now 7-2 this season, all seven wins coming at number two.

* After his dramatic win to clinch the match against Yale the day before, Karim Hussein lost just six points on his way to a 3-0 win. It was the fewest points given up on the day.

*How it Happened

The Quakers' 9-0 win against Brown was a lot less dramatic than their previous two wins that came down to the final match. Penn came away with a 9-0 sweep to clinch their best record through nine matches since 1985.

Andrew Douglas, the hero from Wednesday night, won his second straight match by the score of 3-0. Douglas defeated Thomas Blecher 11-3, 11-6, 11-1 to remain undefeated. Like Douglas, Hussein, the hero from Saturday lost just six points on his way to an 11-4, 11-0, 11-2 victory.

Playing number six, Yash Bhargava rallied from 6-10 down in the first game to win 12-10 and didn't look back as he won the next two games 11-7, 11-6 to win 3-0. The freshman has lost just one match this season.

At the number eight slot, Max Reed played the match of the day as he rallied from 1-2 down to win in five games. The junior lost the 8-11 and lost the third 6-11 heading into the fourth. Reed then dialed in and flipped the script winning the fourth 11-4 before winning the decider 11-5.
