Sprint Football's Fourth-Quarter Comeback Comes Up Short To Army West Point, 24-14

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania sprint football team gave an undefeated Army West Point team a late scare in the closing minutes of Saturday night's home opener, but could not complete the comeback as the Quakers fell to the Black Knights, 24-14. The Quakers put 14 points on the board in the final three minutes to put themselves in position to get within one score before the Black Knight defense prevailed to secure their third straight victory to open the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
*Army West Point (3-0, 2-0) was first to strike on its second possession of the game, as Keegan West connected with Ty Galyean for a 40-yard touchdown to open the scoring.

*The Quakers got off to a slow start offensively, punting on their first four drives before two turnovers on the following two led to a Peter Davis 21-yard field goal to extend the Black Knight lead to 10-0.

*Army out-gained Penn by a margin of 207-74 in the first half, and the Black Knights were poised to increase their lead but Connor Ashton stepped up to pick off a West pass in Penn territory to end the half - giving the Quakers some much-needed momentum heading into the break.

*Following a blocked punt in the end zone for an Army West Point touchdown to extend the lead to 24, Penn began to mount its comeback late in the fourth quarter. With under four minutes remaining, Michael Doulong stepped in front of Brady Miller's pass and took it all the way to the house for a 55-yard pick six. Doulong's score was not only Penn's first points of the night, but also the first scored on Army West Point all season thus far.

*Although the two-point conversion failed, Theodoros Papazekos converted a perfectly executed onside kick and the Quakers were all over it, recovering the ball at the Army 46. Quarterback Eddie Jenkins needed just three plays and 1:05 of the clock to find the end zone yet again - finding Jake Klaus for two catches and 29 yards before connecting with Aidan Kelly for a 17-yard touchdown strike. Jenkins then lofted a jump ball for Marcus Jones in the back corner of the end zone, and the senior came down with it for the two-point conversion.

*The madness continued even after the Quakers failed to recover their second consecutive attempted onside kick, as the defense stood tall to force a three-and-out. With under a minute to play, the Black Knights snapped the ball far over punter John Herrmann's head and the Quakers beat him to the ball, making the recovery on the Army eight yard line. However, the Black Knights forced three straight incomplete passes to turn the Quakers away and hold on to the 24-14 victory.

*Kelly finished the night with seven catches for 103 yards and a touchdown, while Jenkins totaled 157 yards through the air on 12-of-33 passing. Matt Gorman and Tom Console combined for 21 tackles on the night.

Penn (2-1, 2-0) is back on the road next week in Ithaca to take on Ivy League rival Cornell. Friday night's kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
