CONSHOHOCKEN, PA. - The Quaker defense showed its strength for the second consecutive week Friday night, leading the University of Pennsylvania sprint football team to a 20-7 road victory over Chesntnut Hill.
Matt Gorman made a game-clinching sack in the closing minutes - part of an eight tackle night for the freshman - while quarterback Eddie Jenkins was 10-for-21 passing for 192 yards and two total touchdowns, including a 64-yard score to
Aidan Kelly on the first play from scrimmage. Kelly finished the night with four receptions and 111 yards on the night to lead the Penn receiving corps.
HOW IT HAPPENED
*The Quakers came out with a bang Friday night, as the defense forced a three-and-out on Chestnut Hill's opening possession. On Penn's first play from scrimmage, Eddie Jenkins connected with
Aidan Kelly who took it to the house for a 64-yard touchdown reception
*The Penn defense continued its dominant start to the year, forcing five punts and a missed field goal on Chestnut Hill's first six possessions while allowing just 40 yards. Following the fifth Griffin punt of the half, the Quakers took the field and ripped off a 16-play, 65-yard drive to get down to the Chestnut Hill four yard line, but were not able to put any points on the board.
*After the defense forced yet another three-and-out, the Quakers took the ball inside the Chestnut Hill ten yard line, but came away empty-handed again following a recovered fumble by the Griffin defense. Penn allowed just 52 yards of total offense and three first downs in the first half – led by four tackles each from
Matt Gorman and
Connor Ashton.
*Penn started to click on offense on the very first possession of the second half, reeling off a seven-play, 63-yard drive capped off by a goal line score from running back
Jake Klaus. Jenkins was a perfect 3-for-3 passing on the drive for 53 yards, including a 34-yard pass to Kelly down to the Chestnut Hill one on third down.
*On the ensuing Chestnut Hill possession, the Penn defense wreaked havoc once again, this time
Quinn Karam forcing a fumble to keep the Griffins off the board for the eight consecutive drive. Â
*Chestnut Hill made it one-possession game on an 81-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Michael Marino at the 4:58 mark in the third quarter. However, Penn responded in a big way on their next drive. Klaus took the ball on the first three plays from scrimmage, picking up 47 yards on the ground before Jenkins got loose for a 43-yard rushing score to make it a 20-7 Quaker advantage.
*With under ten minutes to play, the Quaker defense made its biggest stand of the game when Tracey Woods, Jr. broke up Marino's pass attempt on fourth-and-one from the Penn 40 to force a turnover on downs.
*Gorman put the game away for good with under three minutes to play, sacking the Griffin quarterback Marino for a loss of eight on fourth-and-one from the Chestnut Hill 35.
