PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team (2-3) hit the road for the first time in 2017 and posted a 3-2 win over Drexel (3-4) in City 6 action on Friday night. After starting the contest down 1-0 in the early goings, Penn countered with three-straight tallies to come away with the win.
"We did some good, exciting things in the second half from the attack," said head coach
Colleen Fink following the win. "I think we did some really nice things offensively that we haven't seen yet this year."
HOW IT HAPPENED
*The Dragons were the ones to strike first as scoring got started early on the night. Megan Wiest registered the first tally off a Tess Bernheimer assist in the 8
th minute to take the 1-0 lead.
*Despite being down, Penn responded quickly and with authority.
Gina Guccione knocked in a
Sofia Palacios assist just over four minutes later at the 11:13 mark to tie the game at 1-1. Two minutes after the first offensive punch,
Alexa Hoover got in the action when she deflected a Guccione shot at the 13:45 mark as Penn pulled ahead 2-1.
*The Quakers added in an insurance goal before the end of the half at the 24:37 mark with a well-executed corner.
Alexa Schneck struck hard down the center from a
Kelsey Mendell insert and
Paige Meily stop on the battery to take the 3-1 lead at intermission.
*Drexel was quick to counter coming out of halftime and got within one in the 38
th minute from a Delaney Baxendale score to put the Dragons close at 3-2. Penn turned away two Dragon corners in the waning seconds of the contest but the Red and Blue stood strong in the circle to hold on to the win.

Penn returns back home to the friendly confines of Ellen Vagelos Field on Sunday, September 17 when they host No. 19 Iowa. Game time is slated for Noon.
