LEXINGTON, Ky. - The 2017 NCAA Track and Field East Region Preliminaries came to a close on Saturday evening for the University of Pennsylvania, as action ended with one NCAA qualification for the Quakers. After lightning and rain delayed competition to start the day, several from the Red and Blue would boast competitive performances, just not quite top-12 advancements.Â
In field events, senior captain Noah Kennedy-White ended his Penn career just on the outside looking in for a qualification to Eugene. He ended flight two of the discus in fourth place with a best throw on his third attempt of 55.18m, but was ultimately pushed out by the heavily stacked third flight, ending in 17th.Â
Mike Monroe looked strong in his first two jumps in the high jump, clearing both 2.00m and 2.05m with ease on his first attempt. In his attempt for 2.10, the junior slipped and fell on his run into the jump, causing some discomfort and resulting in him passing up his final attempts after the first. Nevertheless, Monroe finished in 22nd with a year to go to compete for Penn.Â
After advancing to the quarterfinals in the 1,500m,Â
Chris Hatler placed seventh in the first heat with a time of 3:57.90, ending his career for the Quakers that included a breakout senior season. Also wrapping up their Penn tenure's were distance runnersÂ
Ashley Montgomery andÂ
Clarissa Whiting, both competing in the 5,000m. Montgomery put a strong performance in the beginning of her heat near the top of the pack, but faded late, ending in 30th-place with a time of 17:06.09, while Whiting finished 39th.Â
Entering the event as the last qualifier at No. 48,Â
Chris Luciano proved his worth, finishing 15th in his heat and 35th overall with a time of 14:47.83 to end his junior year. The final event of the day was an historic one for Penn, as the Quakers boasted a women's relay team in the NCAA's for the first time ever.Â
Cecil Ene,Â
Candace Taylor,Â
Mikayla Schneider andÂ
Elena Brown-Soler teamed up in the 4x400, running a time of 3:41.37.Â
The season will conclude for the Quakers with freshmanÂ
Sean Clarke at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. beginning on June 7 and concluding June 10.Â
