PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania men's lightweight rowing team will face crews from No. 1 Yale and No. 7 Columbia on Saturday for the Marcellus Hartley Dodge Cup. Penn will be looking for its first win in this race since 1992; Yale has won 12 of the last 13 Dodge Cup races, the lone blemish coming in 2015 when Columbia rowed to victory.
The Penn lightweights, ranked sixth in the USRowing Coaches Poll released Thursday, enters the weekend off losses to No. 2 Cornell and No. 3 Harvard last Saturday in Princeton. Columbia has lost close races with Princeton, Harvard and Navy while defeating Georgetown; Yale ascended to the top spot this week and boasts wins over Georgetown, MIT and Navy.
With all three Yale crews rowing out of Derby on Saturday, it figures to be a busy day on the Housatonic River. The Dodge Cup will be the first of four lightweight races in the morning, going off at 8:30 a.m. The Second Varsity is scheduled to row at 9 a.m., followed by the Fourth Varsity at 9:45 and the Third Varsity at 10:15. Penn also will row a four in the Fifth Varsity race at 10:30 a.m.
“We are firmly into the racing season now,” said head coach Colin Farrell. “Each week, we are working to improve our performances and make adjustments to find more speed for Penn. Yale was last year’s Sprints champs, and Columbia was last year’s IRA champs. So this will be a good opportunity to test ourselves this weekend in Derby.”
