HOW IT HAPPENED
Penn got off to a slow start again in game two of the three-game series with North Florida, tallying just two hits through the first six innings. Tim Graul put the Quakers in position to have their first lead of the season by leading off the second inning with a two-strike single to right. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Sean Phelan made a productive out with a ground out to second to push Graul to third with one out, but North Florida starter Frank German was able to escape the inning unscathed.
Starting pitcher Jake Cousins worked himself in and out of trouble for the first three innings, giving up a single tally in the second after an infield error led to a run-scoring single. After striking out the leadoff batter in the third, the Ospreys strung together four-straight base hits to extend their lead to three before Cousins coaxed a fly out and strikeout to limit the damage. From the fourth inning on, Cousins settled in to retire seven of the next ten batters he faced before handing the ball over to the bullpen the rest of the way.
The offense came to life in the seventh inning poised to make a comeback as Peter Matt led off the frame with a double into the right field corner for the first extra-base hit of his career. Daniel Halevy followed with his second double in as many games - this one down the right field line as well - to drive in the Quakers' first run of the game and cut the deficit to two.
After Grant Guillory and John Alan Kendrick combined for a perfect inning in relief in their season debuts, Matt O'Neill started the top half of the eighth with a double to right-center with the heart of the lineup coming up behind him. Graul followed with a single back through the middle to score O'Neill to make it a one-run game as North Florida went to their bullpen to set up a left-on-left matchup with Phelan on-deck. However, the Osprey bullpen retired the next six batters in order to hold on for the 3-2 win.
