GRASONVILLE, Md. – The University of Pennsylvania men’s golf team is in fifth place out of 22 teams after Day 1 at the Towson Spring Invitational. The 36-hole event, which concludes on Sunday, is being held on the par-72 Prospect Bay Country Club course.
Penn shot 297 as a team on Saturday, which puts them behind team leader Fairleigh Dickinson (287), Elon (288), Towson (289), and Bethune-Cookman (291). Among the other Ivy League teams in the field, Columbia is tied for seventh at 301 while Cornell is tied for 16th at 310.
Individually, junior Carter Thompson is tied for 10th out of 120 golfers in the field after he shot an even-par 72 on Saturday. Sophomore Josh Goldenberg and senior Matt Kern are in a group tied for 19th after shooting 73 each, while freshman Eric Ganshaw also scored for the Quakers with a first-round 79. Junior Amay Poria rounded out Penn’s lineup on Saturday, carding an 80.
Elon’s Jared Mactas is the individual leader after Saturday’s first round; he carded a 5-under-par 67. That has him a shot ahead of FDU’s Nicolas Osorio, and two ahead of Bethune-Cookman golfers Daniel Brennan and Christian Hovstadius.
