Penn vs. Brown Box Score (PDF)
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Pennsylvania (15-6, 8-0) notched a dramatic come-from-behind victory with a 71-68 win over Brown (14-8, 5-4) on Friday night in Providence, R.I. The Quakers chipped away at a 16-point deficit to seal their 12th-straight Ivy League win and remain undefeated in the Ancient Eight.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Michelle Nwokedi registered her eighth double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 boards, while Anna Ross was also in double-digits for the evening with 15 points, four assists, two steals and four rebounds.
The Quakers used a 45-33 advantage on the boards as well as a 32-18 point lead in the paint to stage their comeback. Furthermore, senior Sydney Stipanovich tied the Ivy League all-time block record during the contest, notching her 305th block of her career to tie the effort of Columbia's Kathy Gilbert set in 1991.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The quick pace replicated the previous meeting as Brown got out to a fast 14-5 lead, forcing a Penn timeout in the early goings. The stoppage wouldn't deter the Brown offense, and Ross picked up two quick fouls to necessitate personnel changes on the court for the Red and Blue. Hot shooting further pushed the hosts to a 26-13 lead by the end of the frame as the Bears hit 11-of-15 by the end of the stanza.
The pace cooled in the second and the Quakers chipped into the Brown advantage by doing their damage in the paint and from the charity stripe. An 13-4 run by the Red and Blue and just 1-of-8 shooting by Brown cut the deficit to three at 36-33 with just under two minutes to play in the half, and Penn went into intermission down by six at 39-33.
Nwokedi led the Quakers coming out of the locker rooms and registered the first eight points of the third. Coupled with a trey from Beth Brzozowski, the duo made it a one point game by the media timeout, 45-44. A pair of Brown free throws and a jumper from Janie White pushed the Bears back to a two-possession lead, but Phoebe Sterba allowed Penn to regain the game off a double dose of trey's as Penn pulled ahead 53-51 and outscored their opponents 20-12 in the set.
A back-and-fourth fourth quarter provided plenty of drama on both sides. Stipanovich and Nwokedi combined to tie the game for the fourth of five times, 66-66, with 2:29 on the clock. A Ross and-1 pulled the Quakers ahead 69-68 at the 1:27 mark, and excellent ball handling from Kasey Chambers sealed the win, 71-68, down the stretch. The senior guard nailed two attempts from the charity stripe as the Bears comeback bid fell short in the waning seconds following a failed three-point attempt.
