Mattiace Finishes Second At Midlands; Wrestling With Best Team Score Since 2001

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Frank Mattiace became Penn's 11th Midlands finalist all-time with his run at 197 pounds, but was one win short of the top spot in the podium following a 3-1 loss in overtime to Iowa's Cash Wilcke in the final on Saturday night.

Each wrestler managed an escape in regulation – Wilcke in the second period and Mattiace in the third – before Wilcke connected on a low ankle shot 0:14 into sudden victory to secure the win.

Mattiace, seeded No. 5 entering the tournament, finished his Midlands 4-1 overall with his lone loss to the No. 3 seed who is ranked No. 8 in the country. On his way to the final, Mattiace picked up a signature win for his resume, dominating South Dakota State's Nate Rotert, 8-1, in the semifinals. Rotert was the No. 1 seed in the tournament and ranked No. 6 in the country entering the tournament.
  • The Red and Blue finished 9th as a team (54.0 points), giving the Quakers their eighth Top-10 finish in 16 team trips to Midlands and first since finishing fifth in 2001.
  • Penn placed three wrestlers at Midlands – the 10th time Penn has had multiple wrestlers on the podium at Midlands and most since placing four in 2003
Mattiace dominated the No. 1 seed in the semifinals, downing South Dakota State's Nate Rotert, 8-1. Mattiace scored the first takedown of the match for a 2-0 lead after one period. In the third, Mattiace connected on two takedowns to widen his gap – the second coming in the final 10 seconds to add a riding time point for a big win over the nation's No. 6 ranked wrestler and a returning Midlands finalist.

May Bethea had two bonus-point victories to open Session III, defeating Maryland's Brendan Burnham, 14-3, in the Round of 12 to ensure a podium finish before picking up a tech fall over Purdue's Jacob Morrissey, 22-8. In the consolation semifinals, Bethea ran into Richie Lewis of Rutgers. The 2017 U23 World Champion broke open a 2-2 match with a pair of takedowns in the second period before adding two more in the third en route to a 12-4 win.

Bethea would finish sixth after dropping a 2-0 decision to Iowa's Kaleb Young. After a scoreless first period, Young escaped in the second and he would ride out in the third for the win.

Joe Heyob continued his path back after a first round loss with two wins in Session III. He rallied past Lehigh's Dylan Ammerman, 10-4, in the Round of 12 with a pair of four-point nearfalls in the third period. In the consolation quarterfinals, he defeated Eastern Michigan's Kayne MacCallum, 5-1, on the strength of takedown in the first period. In the consolation semifinals, Heyob found himself behind to Central Michigan's No. 4 seed Jordan Ellingwood, 6-2, after a six-point throw from Ellingwood in the first period. That deficit was too much and Heyob's comeback attempts led to points against in a 14-5 loss.
