Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Falls to Toledo, 85-72

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team fell to Toledo on Friday afternoon at The Palestra, 85-72. The Quakers led 37-33 at the half, but the Rockets broke open a close game with an 11-2 run to end the contest.

Penn saw its four-game win streak come to an end, and the Quakers are now 9-5 overall. Toledo improved to 8-5 with the victory.

Notes
*This marked the first time Penn lost a game this season when leading at halftime.

*Two days after shooting 61.4 percent overall and almost 52 percent on three-point shots, the Quakers were just 28-65 (.431) overall and 8-of-30 (.267) from beyond the arc.

*Toledo, meanwhile, shot a scintillating 9-of-14 (.643) from three-point land including each of their last four attempts in the game's final seven minutes.

*Penn lost despite committing just six turnovers, tying a team low in the Steve Donahue coaching era (originally set last year against Dartmouth).

*Sophomore Ryan Betley was Penn's leading scorer with 20 points, his team-leading 11th double-figure scoring game this season and his fourth with at least 20.

*Junior Max Rothschild had his third double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. He also had four assists, one shy of his season/career high.

*Senior Darnell Foreman had 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals on Friday. It was his high point game since he had 16 vs. Towson on November 21.

*Sophomore AJ Brodeur finished the game with nine points, while junior Antonio Woods and senior Caleb Wood had eight apiece. Wood had the only bench points of the game for the Quakers.

How It Happened
A back-and-forth first half saw five lead changes and seven ties and finished with Penn leading, 37-33.

Toledo was able to make up the small difference fairly quickly, and took its first lead since 15-13 when Tre'Shaun Fletcher hit a jumper to make it 45-43 with a little more than 14 minutes left. Antonio Woods knotted it back up with a nice move in the lane, and then the teams traded points for ties at 49-49, 51-51 and 53-53.

A Ryan Betley three-pointer with 8:16 remaining pushed Penn ahead, 56-55, but then a missed layup led to a Toledo runout and a conventional three-point play by Toledo's Jaelan Sanford. Sanford then drained a new-fangled trey to push the Rockets ahead, 61-56, but Penn made got a three-pointer from Darnell Foreman and a layup from Betley to tie the score at 61-61.

Marreon Jackson knocked down a trey to push Toledo back ahead, and the Rockets never gave up that lead. Foreman was good on one of two free throws, and then Luke Knapke and Max Rothschild matched layups to make it 66-64. After Sanford hit one of two foul shots, AJ Brodeur was fouled but missed both of his free throws. Jackson was fouled at the other end and hit both shots, making it a five-point game.

The score was just 69-65, before Nate Navigato shook free for Toledo and drained a three-pointer. Foreman matched it, but then Fletcher (16 second-half points) banked home a drive. Brodeur matched it, but then another Navigato trey with 1:30 left proved to be a dagger. The Rockets ended up scoring on their last seven possessions to pull away as Penn's final three treys were off the mark.
