Quakers & Answers: Zach O'Leary

Senior long snapper Zach O'Leary prefers to be noticed for his good hair, his MC Hammer dancing or his celebrations than for his on the field exploits. Any good snapper knows if he's off the radar then he's had a good day. The Mateca, Calif. native has stayed true to his 49ers and Giants roots despite moving across the country for college, but has picked up on the deliciousness that Wawa has to offer. A two-time Ivy League champion, O'Leary also claims to be the second-best Thor going today and challenges anyone to say they've seen Pitch Perfect more than he has.

FFI: What is your favorite part of being a Penn Football player?

Zach: I know it is cliché, but the camaraderie. You get instant access to 100 friends and it is great to be a part of that.

FFI: What is your favorite Franklin Field memory?
Zach: Sophomore year was magical, and the Homecoming win over Princeton may be my favorite memory of that year. We blocked a kick at the end of regulation and went on to win in overtime. I went charging into the pile and accidentally (Ed. Note: Definitely on purpose) looked right in the camera. That photo was my profile pic of Facebook for a while and got a lot of likes.

FFI: What was the moment you realized Penn was the school for you?
Zach: I always knew I wanted to go to an Ivy, and Penn was actually the only one I wasn't too familiar with. I got a call from Coach Priore to come visit Penn and even though it was snowy and rainy when I came, I knew immediately this was the right place. I never expected to feel that way about a school, but I am glad I did.

FFI: How did you get into long snapping?
Zach: Being a snapper is such a unique position. I played linebacker and tight end in high school in addition to long snapping. But, at Lawrenceville is where it took off. I didn't play football my year there, so I needed film. The coach at the time helped me out and we made a highlight film. A couple weeks later, Coach Priore called. Penn brought me in and the rest is history.

FFI: What is the best part of being a part of the "Blue Squad"?
Zach: First, we'll always be the "Gold Squad" no matter what practice jersey color we have. The best part is that we all can't take ourselves too seriously. We take our jobs very seriously, but we get to be spectators at times and see everything as it is happening during practice. That allows us to enjoy some of the looser moments that come up during a practice that the other guys can't. We're really good at switching mindsets to stay off the coaches' radar.

FFI: Who was your role model growing up?
Zach: I know a lot of people say a parent, but that's true for me as well. He wanted me to have more than he had growing up and I appreciate that. When I was in middle school I started to realize how much he sacrificed for me and I always do my best to try hard and show him how appreciative of that I am.

FFI: What is your favorite Disney Movie?
Zach: Beauty And The Beast. The songs are fire, and the romance really brings you in.

FFI: What app can you not live without?
Zach: Star Wars: Galaxy Of Heroes. I just reached another Jedi level so I am crushing it. I am ranked like 1300th out of all the people who play it.

FFI: Which of your teammates would go the furthest on America's Got Talent?
Zach: Put me on! I'm funny! I have good hair! I play in a jazz band!

FFI: Who has the best nickname on the team?
Zach: Tayler Hendrickson goes by Polar Bear -- or PB. He's a big, strong guy with lots of energy and that's a good nickname.

FFI: Which teammate would end up on the cover of US Weekly?
Zach: Kohl Hollinquest. He's already pretty swagged out and into art, music and fashion. I can see him becoming super famous.

FFI: What is an underrated TV show?
Zach: Coach. I binged that on Netflix and came away feeling like it was a biopic of Coach P.

FFI: What are your post-graduation plans?
Zach: Most likely financial sales. Or moving to Seattle to live on a dock as a broke musician.
