PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Two goals as the clock was winding down spurned the University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team on Saturday night, as the Quakers dropped a 2-1 overtime contest to Brown in Providence. With the loss, the Red and Blue drop to 3-11-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the Ivy League.
KEY MOMENTS
*The early moments of the game were primarily played between the eighteen's from both sides. Penn notched the first two shots of the contest on strikes from
Sam Wancowicz and
Amado Lozano.
*The Quakers were able to hold off the Brown attack despite the Bears notching several corner kicks in the opening period of play.
*Penn goalkeeper
Scott Forbes notched his first save of the match in the 40th minute, collecting a shot from Brown's Toby Howell.
*The final seconds of the first half proved to be detrimental to the Quakers, as Brown struck on a shot from 20 yards out from outside the right of the box from Quinn English. The shot wasn't sent in the air but found the back of the net regardless to give Brown a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
*Penn came out firing in the second half with two shots in the opening five minutes, including a strike on goal from
Joe Swenson.
*The Red and Blue continued to apply pressure throughout the period and eventually struck for a goal from Wancowicz in the 70th minute. The senior captain nearly duplicated the Brown score from earlier in the night, notching a score from 20 yards outside the right of the box into the far post. The goal evened the match at 1-1.
*The Quakers were able to hold off a strong Brown attack in the waning minutes to send the game into overtime. The luck would continued for Penn in the 93rd minute as the Bears scored what appeared to be a golden goal that was eventually waved off by the offsides flag.
*With less than a minute remaining in the first overtime period, the Bears would end things on a header goal from Nico Lozada, giving Brown a 2-1 overtime win.
PENN NOTES
*Saturday's contest marked the second-straight game the Bears and Quakers have gone into overtime. The teams have split results the past two seasons with one win each.
*Wancowicz's goal is his second of the year, giving the senior captain six points this fall, ranking second on the team.
*The match marked the second overtime game of the year for Penn. The Quakers are 0-1-1 in such battles.
*Brown narrowly outshot Penn on the night, 10-9. The Bears had the distinct advantage in corners however, at 8-1.
*Forbes collected four saves on the night, pushing his season total to 25.
