MORGANTOWN, W.V. - A 65th minute penalty kick opportunity was all it took for West Virginia to edge the University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team Tuesday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. With the 1-0 loss, the Quakers fall to 3-10-1 on the year and remain at 1-2-1 in the Ivy League.

KEY MOMENTS
*The first half featured several strong moments from the Red and Blue. After the opening whistle, WVU played the role of the early aggressor, but Penn settled in nicely, earning the game's first shot on goal from Dami Omitaomu saved by Mountaineer goalie Steven Tekesky.

*Senior captain Sam Wancowicz asserted himself offensively from the get-go, testing his ability from distance to put pressure on the West Virginia backline with his first shot in the 26th minute.

*Penn nearly grabbed the lead in the 31st minute on a perfectly placed bending ball sent from Wancowicz to the head of Jake Kohlbrenner that bounced into the back of the net. Unfortunately for the Quakers, the offsides flag was up, waving the play dead.

*Kohlbrenner remained undeterred offensively though, as just minutes later the rookie fought through contact at the top of the penalty box to send a ball just wide left of the goal.

*The first half ended with Penn on top of West Virginia in both shots and corners, allowing zero real threats from the Mountaineers.

*The Mountaineers upped their intensity to start the second period, putting immediate pressure on the Red and Blue defense. Early fouls in the period called near the penalty box against Penn would signal bad things to come for the Quakers, as WVU took advantage of a foul called in the box in the 65th minute, scoring on a penalty kick to make it 1-0.

*Penn was able to take back some of the momentum after the early barrage of West Virginia aggression, including another shot from Kohlbrenner in the 74th minute that forced a save from Tekesky.

*The final whistle blew with the score 1-0 in favor of the Mountaineers despite no goals scored during the run of play.

PENN NOTES
*After leading in both shots and corners at halftime, Penn ultimately lost the battle in both categories 10-6 and 8-4 respectively after an aggressive second half from West Virginia.

*Wancowicz and Kohlbrenner both had two shots on the night to lead the Quakers.

*Santi Musalem Pinto earned the first start of his career against the Mountaineers, playing personal-high 67 minutes.

*Scott Forbes earned his third-straight start on Tuesday night, allowing only one goal off the penalty kick. The junior collected one save.

*The Quakers drop to 1-4 in the all-time series against West Virginia. All five contests with the Mountaineers have been decided by a single goal.

WHAT'S NEXT?
It's all Ivy League play remaining for the Quakers this fall with three games left on the slate. Penn will stay on the road for a matchup with the Brown Bears in Providence on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.
