Field Hockey Posts 1-0 Win Over Yale on Palacios Tally

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania picked up a hard-fought 1-0 win on Friday against Yale (7-6, 1-4) on a beautiful, 70-degree fall day at Ellen Vagelos Field. With the victory, the Quakers improved to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the Ancient Eight and posted their fourth win in five outings against the Elis.

HOW IT HAPPENED
*Penn began the offensive onslaught from the start and earned a penalty corner in the seventh minute in addition to holding a firm grasp on possession in the early goings. Following the chance, play settled into a rhythm and both defenses held strong in their defensive thirds of the field.

*In the 24th minute, junior Sofia Palacios gave Penn the 1-0 lead on a nifty possession. The forward dribbled through two Yale defenders and knocked in a shot on the bounce as the Red and Blue pulled ahead on Palacios' first goal of the season.

*The Quaker lead held at intermission as sophomore goalkeeper Ava Rosati saved a Yale attempt in the 28th minute. At the half, shots were tied at 4-4 while Penn had a 2-1 lead in corners.

*Yale came out of halftime with renewed energy, but the Red and Blue defense had excellent circle play to turn away the opposing attack. The Quakers stifled three corners in less than four minutes to maintain the scoreline by the 54th minute.

*Following a five minute yellow card on Gina Guccione, the Quakers played smart with their possessions as time wound down on Yale's counterattack. A final corner for the Red and Blue in the 67th minute sailed high and junior back Paige Meily successfully maintained the ball as the Quakers claimed the 1-0 win over Yale.

*Shots on goal were tied at 6-6 for the match while Penn had a 7-3 lead in corners for the day. On the defensive end, Rosati made six stops in the victory while Yale's Sydney Terroso tallied five in the defeat.
