PHILADELPHIA - Brian Gill has been named assistant coach for the University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team. The announcement was made by Penn's James C. Gentle Head Coach of Men's Soccer, Rudy Fuller. Gill replaces Pete Pososki, who recently accepted the position of Director of Talent ID with the Philadelphia Union Academy.
"I am thrilled to welcome Brian to our staff at Penn," said Fuller. "I have known Brian for almost ten years and have admired his work at Georgetown and elsewhere. We have always discussed the possibility of working together at some point, and it's great to finally get that opportunity."
Gill comes to Penn after spending the past seven seasons at Georgetown University as an assistant coach. He helped lead the Hoyas to a 16-2-3 mark in 2015, including a perfect mark in Big East play and a program-record 18-match unbeaten streak.
"First, I would like to thank Coach Fuller for the opportunity he has given me to become a part of the University of Pennsylvania men's soccer program," said Gill. "I am excited to get working alongside him, the rest of the staff, and the team to continue the strong soccer tradition that exists here. I would also like to thank Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese, Zach Samol, and all the players at Georgetown for some great experiences and memories over the years."
In 2012, Gill helped guide the Hoyas to the NCAA College Cup final after they started the year unranked. GU finished that season 19-4-3, setting a school record in wins and earning the No. 3 seed in the national tournament.
"Brian is widely considered one of the top young coaches in the country, and has been an integral part of the Hoya program and their success over the past seven years," said Fuller. "His experience at Georgetown and in the Big East Conference will allow him to make an immediate and valuable impact on our team. Brian is a winner with a tremendous track record of recruiting and developing student-athletes, and I am excited to begin working with him to help our program reach new heights in the years ahead."
During his tenure at Georgetown, Gill coached 14 players who signed with a Major League Soccer (MLS) squad, one MAC Hermann Trophy finalist, three Hermann Trophy semifinalists, nine All-Americans, 22 regional All-Americans, nine Big East Players of the Year and 30 All-Big East honorees, as well as the College Cup Most Outstanding Offensive Player. Academically, one Academic All-American, one Big East Scholar-Athlete and one Elite89 Award winner played under Gill's tutelage.
Prior to spending time in the nation's capital, Gill spent one season at Seattle University (2009) and two seasons at Lafayette College in nearby Easton, Pa. (2007-2008).
Gill currently holds a USSF 'B' License as well as an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and a National Goalkeepers Diploma.
As a player, Gill was a two-time team MVP at Rider University and helped the team reach the MAAC Championship final in 2000 and 2003. He also played goalkeeper for the Brooklyn Knights of USL's Premier Development League from 2001-13.
Gill graduated magna cum laude from Rider with a degree in secondary education and history. He earned his master's degree at Georgetown in sports industry management.
