Philadelphia, Pa.-Six different Quakers scored for the University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team defeated Ohio State, 8-7, in sudden-death overtime to open the 2005 season. Senior goalie Liz Lorelli made a game-high 12 saves between the pipes as the Quakersimprove to 1-0 on the season and the Buckeye's move to 1-1.

"I'm really proud of the team," said Head Coach Karin Brower. "They played with a lot of heart and proved that they can come back. We won on draw controls and ground balls, something that we have been working on, and we ran the attack the way we wanted to and that paid off in the overtime. The defense did a really good job. It was an all-around team effort."

The Quakers struck first, with Allie Juras scoring with 28:31 remaining in the first half. Penn quickly opened up a 3-0 lead on goals by Katie Spofford (25:07) and Ali Ryan (23:11) before Ohio State found its offensive footing. Lindsey Weiner scored the first Buckeye goal at the 18:03 mark. The two teams traded goals to close out the half, with Chrissy Muller (5:56) and Ashley Evans (2:28) each scoring. Penn took a 4-2 lead into the break.

The scored at 4-2 until the 25:27 mark in the second half, when Kelly Kremer scored for Ohio State. The Quakers answered the Buckeye score on Ryan's second goal of the game at 23:44 on a pass from Juras. Following another Ohio State goal, freshman Rachel Manson scored her first collegiate goal at the 19:18 mark. Ohio State scored twice more in the second stanza to tie the game at 6, sending the Quakers season-opener to overtime.

In the first overtime period, Kremer scored her second goal of the game to give the Buckeyes the advantage on a pass from Kristen Slahor. However, freshman Allison Ambrozy tied the game with an unassisted goal with 1:55 left to send the game to sudden-death. In the second sudden-death period, Ryan scored her third goal of the game on another pass from Juras to give the Quakerse the win with 2:21 remaining.

Lorelli saved12 shots in her first start of the season. Kim Hastings had four saves for the Buckeyes.

The Quakers are next in action on Tuesday, March 8 when they host Rutgers on Franklin Field. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
