Stephen McDonnell joined the athletic training staff at Penn in October 2025.
 
McDonnell came to Penn after six years at Chestnut Hill College, including the last two as the head athletic trainer. In that position, he oversaw all aspects of the sports medicine department and worked with the Griffins’ football and men’s lacrosse programs.
 
Prior to that, McDonnell spent a year with NovaCare Rehabilitation where he worked with the Temple University football team, served as head athletic trainer at Log College Middle School and assistant athletic trainer for William Tennent High School. He has also spent the last several summers as a lifeguard at Elbow Lane Day Camp in Warrington, Pa.
 
McDonnell got his bachelor’s degree from Temple University in athletic training, then earned a Master of Science in Athletic Training, Post Professional from West Chester University. During his undergraduate days at Temple McDonnell received clinical experience with various Philadephia-area college athletic programs including Penn (spring 2017) as well as Holy Family University (spring 2018) and Temple (fall 2017).
 
A National Athletic Trainer Association (NATA) member and Certified Athletic Trainer, McDonnell is Health Care Provider CPR and AED certified by the Emergency Care and Safety Institute and holds Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR and AED certifications from the American Red Cross.
