Julia Malseed was hired in July 2018 and just finished her first season as an assistant coach at Penn. In her first season she helped lead a young Quakers squad to a 6-19 (3-11 Ivy) record.
Malseed came to Penn after spending two years as an assistant coach at nearby Swarthmore College. The Garnet had an historic season in 2017, going 24-8 overall, earning their first NCAA Division 3 Championship bid, then winning three NCAA matches and advancing all the way to the quarterfinal round. Swarthmore ended the year ranked 18th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division 3 national poll, the program’s first-ever national ranking.
The 2016 season was Malseed’s first on staff, and Swarthmore went 27-5 overall and was ECAC champion. In both 2016 and 2017, the Garnet played for the Centennial Conference Tournament title but fell both times to Johns Hopkins.
A 2012 graduate of nearby Ridley High School, Malseed has experience offensively and defensively as she played two seasons at libero and two seasons as an outside hitter at Neumann University. She was named first-team All-Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) as a senior, honorable mention All-CSAC as a junior, and was awarded CSAC academic honors every season. As a freshman in 2012, Malseed helped the Knights win the CSAC championship and participate in that year’s NCAA Championship. She also was a member of Neumann’s softball team her senior year, when the Knights won the CSAC title and earned an NCAA Championship berth.
Before joining Swarthmore's staff, Malseed coached with Mystique Volleyball Club. Additionally, her camp and clinic experience includes coaching at Garnet Volleyball clinics, Ridley High School preseason camps, and Neumann University Volleyball Camps.
