Brian Ward recently completed his first season as the assistant coach of the Penn men's tennis program. In his maiden season in University City, the Quakers tallied three more Ivy wins than a year ago and finished three slots better in the Ancient Eight standings. Individually, Kyle Mautner was named first-team All-Ivy, giving Penn its' first all-conference performer since 2012.Â
Ward arrived at Penn after a three-year stint as an assistant coach at Georgetown. Working with both the men’s and women’s programs at Georgetown, Ward began his stint at his alma mater as a volunteer assistant in 2012 and moved into a full-time assistant role in 2013. During the 2012-13 season, the women’s program achieved a national ranking for the first time in school history. In his three years as an assistant with the Georgetown men’s team, Ward helped guide the Hoyas to 29 wins, including a 12-9 record during the 2012-13 campaign.
In addition to his coaching duties, Ward served as Tournament Director for the Georgetown Classic men’s and women’s fall tournament. He also worked as an assistant director in Georgetown’s Athletic Events department, serving as a liaison with visiting teams and coordinating all aspects of home events for women’s basketball and softball.
Ward has also been involved with many camps and worked as a personal instructor throughout his career. From 2012-14, he was Assistant Director of the Nike Tennis Camp at Georgetown and he was an instructor at the Central Minnesota Community Tennis Association in his home state. He also taught abroad, working with players in Copenhagen, Denmark during a pair of international trips.
Ward graduated cum laude from Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business in 2012 with a degree in business administration. While with the Hoyas, Ward was a two-time letterwinner and twice was named to the Big East All-Academic Team. He transferred to Georgetown after beginning his collegiate career at Creighton where he twice was a letterwinner and earned a pair of ITA Scholar Athlete awards. Ward also has a Master's Degree from Georgetown in Sports Industry Management, which he completed in 2014.
