Geoff Bond was hired in July 2015 and has completed three years as the Nicholas B. Paumgarten Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing at the University of Pennsylvania.
Bond was a coach at the University of California from 1996-2009, including a nine-year stint as Associate Head Coach during which time he oversaw the freshman/novice rowers and coxswains.
While at Cal, Bond coached boats that won gold medals at the IRA National Championships five times during his tenure, silver three other times, and bronze twice. His Freshman 8 won five-straight Pac-10 crowns, from 2003-07, and were undefeated national champions in both 2004, 2005 and 2007. Bond guided the Cal JV to second place in the Ladies’ Challenge Cup at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta in 1999, while his 2007 Freshmen won the Temple Challenge Cup at Henley, a first in Cal’s history.
Bond also served as an instructor for CRUfit in Oakland, Calif., where he designs and leads innovative training sessions and runs development camps for junior rowers. He also serves as a personal trainer.
In the spring of 2014, Bond was interim Head Boys’ Crew Coach and Boathouse Director at Deerfield (Mass.) Academy. He led Deerfield to its first New England championship in nine years as well as a bronze medal at the Youth Nationals. In 2012, he was a strength and conditioning consultant for a Chinese National Team club in Jiangsu, China. Bond also coached crew at the interscholastic level at Salisbury (Conn.) School from 1988-90, and Berkeley (Calif.) High School from 1994-96.
Bond is a 1988 graduate of Brown University, where he earned a B.A. in Classical Greek and Roman History. As a walk-on, Bond raced in the freshman, junior varsity, and varsity eights between 1984 and 1988. During that period, the Bears’ varsity won an Eastern Sprints title and two IRA national championships.
