Biography

Powell on Materna: “Mark is a diamond in the rough in a group of mid-distance runners that has seen its share of gems over the past few years.  He emerged out of obscurity in only his second season with the Quakers when he broke on the scene during the 2004 Indoors.  He seemed to be recording personal bests each time he set foot on the track and peaked at just the right time when he recorded a surprising third place finish at the Heptagonal Indoor Championships in the mile.  Materna competed sparingly during the outdoor season, but did see some action on various relays.  He is now a veteran leader among his peers and will be looked upon to take it to the next level and challenge for an individual title in his junior year.  Mark is a student in the College of Arts and Sciences.”
