Matthew Henwood

  • Title
    Volunteer Assistant

Matt Henwood enters his sixth season as a volunteer assistant for the Penn men's lightweights in 2016-17.

With Henwood on the staff, Penn posted their best back-to-back finishes at the IRA National Championships in a decade and reached the Grand Final for the fourth time since 1997 en route to a fourth-place showing. The lightweights also defended the Callow Cup from Navy to post back-to-back wins for the first time since the 1999-2000 seasons, and advanced to the IRA regatta for the third time in four seasons -- the program's best stretch since a three-year run from 2005-07.

Prior to Penn, Henwood served as the head men's coach at Crescent Boat Club in the summer of 2005 and also spent the 2006-07 season as the varsity coach at La Salle College High School. During that season, the varsity 8+ went undefeated in the fall, the lightweight men's 8+ finished second at the 2007 Catholic League championships and the second varsity eight earned the silver medal at the 2007 city championships.

Henwood graduated from Marietta College in just three and a half years. He was a three-year member of the Varsity 8+ and served as a co-captain during his senior season. During his time as a Pioneer, Henwood was a three-time Dad Vail medalist, two-time SIRA medalist, and in 2004, he was an IRA bronze medalist in the men's pair.

Prior to his collegiate career, Henwood was a varsity crew member for La Salle College High School where he was a medalist at the Stotesbury and Scholastic National Championships.

Matt and his wife, Kristen, reside in Ardmore, Pa.
