Steve Cunha was named the University of Pennsylvania’s Associate Director of Athletic Communications/Director of Social Media in February 2020. In addition to his duties overseeing Penn’s social media strategy, he works directly as the Athletic Communications contact for several of the Quakers' varsity programs.
Cunha came to Penn from Rider University. With the Broncs, he served as the main contact for field hockey, women’s volleyball, women’s basketball, swimming & diving, baseball, track & field and cross country. During his tenure in Lawrenceville, Cunha played a large part in the redesign of the athletics website and he was also instrumental in creating a unified voice and brand for the athletics department’s social media channels.
Before coming to Rider, Cunha served as the Sports Information Director at Albertus Magnus College from September 2015 to December 2016. While with the Falcons, he oversaw the redesign of the athletic department’s website, AlbertusFalcons.com. He also helped increase the department’s social footprint with an emphasis on using graphic design and video highlights to build the athletic department brand on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Cunha joined Albertus after serving as a Sports Communications Assistant for the Trinity College Athletic Department in Hartford, Conn. In his position at Trinity, he provided communications support for Trinity Athletics, including game coverage, media relations, social media, and web-based communications. Some of his other responsibilities were designing and editing of game programs and department publications, maintenance of the athletics web site, management of social media presence and maintenance of historical records and statistics.
Prior to his stint at Trinity, Cunha worked at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire as the was the main contact for women’s hockey, men’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s tennis.
Cunha also served as a Sports Information Assistant at UMass Dartmouth (Mass.) and was the Assistant Director for Sports Communications at the University of North Georgia. At UMass Dartmouth, he served as the primary media contact for half of the University's 23 varsity sports, while at UNG, he was the main contact for baseball and women’s basketball.
Cunha completed his Bachelor’s degree in Communication-Media Studies with a minor in Sports Management in May 2009 from the Salve Regina University in Newport, R.I. While at Salve, he was an assistant in the Sports Information office for a year.
Cunha is a current member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and the Eastern College Athletic Conference Sports Information Directors Association (ECAC-SIDA).
Steve and his wife, Keren, have a son, Hudson.
