Derek DeMaria joined the Penn baseball coaching staff prior to the 2022 seasons after four years as an assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of the Sciences.
Following two seasons cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, Penn set a slew of program records in 2022 and 2023, most notably breaking the 30-win plateau for the first time in program history with 33 victories in 2022 and 34 in 2023. That included a program-record 17 wins in Ivy League play in 2022 and 16 more in 2023 as Penn won the Ivy League regular-season title both years and took 13 of 14 conference series across the two seasons. The Quakers also hosted and won the Ivy League Tournament in 2023, the first year the Ivy League conducted a four-team postseason, and advanced to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 1995. At the Auburn regional, fourth-seeded Penn made more history by becoming the first Ivy League team to win its first two games since the NCAA went to four-team regional play in 1999 but dropped a pair of games to second-seeded Southern Miss which allowed the Golden Eagles to advance to the Super Regional.
Penn has had 20 All-Ivy players over the last two seasons including 11 who were named first-team All-Ivy. That includes Kevin Eaise, a unanimous pick as the 2022 Ivy League Pitcher of the Year, and Ryan Dromboski who was the 2023 Ivy League Pitcher of the Year.
DeMaria came to Penn after four seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of the Sciences. In his second season in 2019, USciences set a Division II-era program record with 17 victories, more than doubling both its overall and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win total from the previous year.
During his playing career, USciences improved both its overall and CACC win total in each of his final three years. DeMaria played in 86 career games for the Devils, totaling 43 hits, 32 walks, 15 runs and 13 RBI. DeMaria also won four consecutive Parochial State Championships at Gloucester Catholic High School prior to USciences, captaining the team his senior year.
DeMaria received his Bachelor in Exercise Science and Wellness Management from the University of the Sciences.
