JAMES D. DUNNING JR. COACHES CENTER

The James D. Dunning Jr. Coaches Center was built in 1905 as the J. William White Training House. The building was originally constructed as a dormitory for students who compete in university athletic programs, segregating them from the general student population. The training house featured 26-bedrooms, a dining room, and living space and was named after James William White (1815-1960) – Penn’s Chair of Clinical Surgery, Chairman of the Department of Physical Education, and Penn Football’s team physician.

Extensive renovations began in Spring of 1997, converting the former training facility into offices for Penn coaches and their support staff. The building officially reopened as the James D. Dunning Coaches Jr. Center on February 9, 1999, named after former Penn hockey and baseball player, James Dunning Jr. W’70. Today, the building is home to the offices of Penn baseball, field hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, rowing, softball, track and field, volleyball, and wrestling. The Dunning Coaches Center also features two conference rooms – the Steve Bilsky '71 Directors’ Room and the Mendelson Room – as well as the Penn Sports Network studio and Athletics IT offices.
