WEIGHTMAN HALL
In 1903, the University of Pennsylvania began the expansion of Franklin Field, including the addition of Weightman Hall. The building was named after wealthy Philadelphia chemist, entrepreneur, and real estate developer, William Weightman (1813-1904). Completed in 1905, Weightman Hall sits at the west end of Franklin Field and was originally constructed as a field house dedicated to athletics. Among the building’s many features was athletic locker rooms, a training room, a multipurpose gymnasium, and indoor swimming pool. The multipurpose gym hosted events such as boxing and men’s gymnastics while also serving as the official home of Penn basketball until the completion of The Palestra in 1927.
Today, Weightman Hall remains one of the university’s main athletic administration buildings. While Weightman Gym is still a popular practice facility for many varsity, club and intramural teams, the building has since transformed into office space for specific departments including facilities and operations, marketing, sponsorship, athletic communications, the Center for Student Athlete Success, compliance, athletic finance, the varsity football and sprint football coaching staff, senior administration and the office of the Athletic Director. The athletics ticket office can also be found at the north end of Weightman Hall, serving as the main box office and will call location for home football and men’s lacrosse games, as well as the Penn Relays. At the south end of the building is Penn Sports Medicine – a division of Penn Medicine specializing in sports related injuries and orthopedic surgery.
