*Pokrovsky, Secretarski, and
Ernie Echevarria all finished with multiple hits to guide the visitors to a series win in Cambridge.
*Senior co-captain
Thomas Shurtleff has claimed the last two Ivy League Pitcher of the Week awards, and he'll have a chance to make it three in a row. The Medfield, Mass. native threw seven innings out of the bullpen and matched his career-high 10 strikeouts, while allowing only four hits, two runs, and one walk.
How It Happened (Game 1)
Penn wasted no time in the first inning, jumping out an early 4-0 lead. Degnan drove in the first run of the day with a single through the right side and Warner followed shortly after with an RBI base knock of his own. The final two runs of the frame crossed home plate after a fielding error at second base.
Harvard battled back with a home run by Liam Wilson in the second inning. Despite letting up a run, Darling struck out three Crimson to send the Red and Blue's offense back to the dish.
Â
Collins' RBI double to left field drove in Warner in the third frame, after the rookie drew a walk and stole second base. The Quakers' lead extended to 6-1 in the following inning as Taylor stole third, drawing a poor throw that allowed him to cruise home.
The visitors' bats remained hot in their next trip to the plate, scoring two runs on three hits. Pokrovsky and Warner kept the offense going with a single and a double down the right-field line to move into scoring position. The duo didn't have to wait long to waltz across the dish as an RBI single and fielder's choice from Collins and
Nick O'Brien made it an 8-1 ballgame.
Harvard's offense quickly responded with a three-run sixth inning. Zach Khozozian homered to left center after Coyne struck out Gio Colasante, and Jack Rickheim also left the yard with a two-run homer that scored Wilson.
Jack Smith and Coyne shut down the offenses in the seventh frame, but the eighth featured five runs. Taylor and Secretarski reached on a single to shortstop and a walk, then were signaled to make the dash for the dish as Degnan ripped a double to left center. Rickheim responded with a two-run home run to left field and Max Lane's RBI fielder's choice brought the hosts within three runs (10-7) of knotting the contest.
The Quakers would not be denied a Game 1 triumph as they tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning. Collins tallied his third and fourth RBI of the day with his third home run of the season that soared over the wall in left field. Penn's final run of the day was driven in by Secretarski's single to right field that scored O'Brien.
Katz tossed the final two frames for Penn and allowed only two hits over that stretch to close out the victory.
How It Happened (Game 2)
In similar fashion to Game 1, the Red and Blue snagged their first lead of Game 2 in their first at-bat. The bases were loaded as Spaventa stepped to the plate, and the junior's sac fly to left field let Taylor stroll home from third.
Freshman starter
Nick Newburn shut down the hosts' offense in the first two innings and notched four strikeouts in seven batters faced.
Penn had an electric third inning that gave its traveling fans plenty to cheer for. With two outs, Degnan demolished a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall that tied the home run lead for the Quakers. Spaventa and Degnan weren't tied for long as the Pitman, N.J. native responded with a no doubter to nearly the same spot in left field to hand the visitors a 3-0 lead.
Jordan Kang's RBI double to right center made it a 3-1 ballgame, but Shurtleff struck out Colasante to end the frame and halt any momentum for the hosts. Â
Echevarria and O'Brien reached base on back-to-back walks in the fourth inning and were driven in shortly after. Taylor's single up the middle drove in Echevarria, while Secretarski's double down the left-field line sent O'Brien and Taylor home.
Pokrovsky and Echevarria extended the visitors' advantage to seven runs (8-1) with an RBI double and single in the fifth frame.
Daniel Sams and Shurtleff slowed down the offenses as the sixth inning got rolling, but the Quakers found their offensive momentum again during the seventh. Pokrovsky lined his second RBI double of the afternoon down the left-field line to score pinch hitter
Nick Guachione, and Taylor's groundout scored Pokrovsky soon after.
Shurtleff finished off a strong 18 innings for Penn by striking out five of the Crimson's final nine batters to secure the Saturday sweep in Cambridge.
