How It Happened (Game 1)
Alejandro Puig ripped a leadoff single up the middle to get Dartmouth rolling, but was later caught stealing second base. Moss concluded the inning by striking out Nico Banez and getting Milo Suarez to pop up to second base.
Nate Isler started on the hill for the Big Green and struck out two Quakers to end a scoreless first inning.
Â
Both sides scored three runs in the second frame. Camden Rush, Sam Andersen and Banez all registered RBI singles to hand the visitors an early 3-0 lead.
Penn quickly responded in the bottom of the inning with three runs on three hits and an error. The Quakers had a runner in scoring position when Warner approached the plate, and his double to left center brought in their first run of the afternoon. Collins' single through the left side shortly after allowed
Ernie Echevarria and Warner to score.
After an eventful offensive start, the pitchers began to battle in the third and fourth innings. Isler retired the hosts in 1-2-3 order, including striking out the side in the fourth. Moss followed up, allowing only two hits over those two innings with two strikeouts.
Penn's fifth run of the day came in the fifth inning, and it all started with a leadoff triple from Degnan, the Quakers' third of the season. The Lakehurst, N.J. native eventually crossed home plate thanks to an RBI groundout by Pokrovsky.
Moss retired the Big Green's first three batters in the sixth and seventh innings, but Isler and reliever Trey Sejnoha silenced Penn's bats over that stretch.
The Red and Blue took control in the eighth frame with a four-run inning to garner an 8-3 advantage. Warner approached the plate with bases loaded, and his sac fly drove in
Nick Guachione. Sejnoha then walked Secretarski and Taylor, allowing Powell to score. The final two runs of the day crossed home plate when Spaventa reached on an error, scoring Echevarria, and when Degnan was hit by a pitch, Secretarski scored.
Sophomore reliever
Connor Darling notched his third save of the year with two strikeouts in the top of the ninth to hand Penn its first victory in Ivy League play.
How It Happened (Game 2)
Pitchers
Marty Coyne and Nathan Matoush earned the starting nods on the hill in Game 2.
Similarly to Game 1, Dartmouth was first to put a run on the board, taking a 1-0 lead in the first frame. Puig made his way to first after drawing a walk, followed by a double down the left-field line by Banez. Suarez was then hit by a pitch to load the bases and Puig ended up scoring when A.J. DeMastrie grounded into a double play.
Penn couldn't get anything going in the first inning, but it tied the game in the second. Facing one out, Pokrovsky singled up the middle and Warner followed up with a single of his own to left field. The tying run crossed home plate courtesy of a double to left field from Echevarria.
The Quakers' bats stayed hot in the third frame, driving in two runs. Taylor began the charge with a leadoff triple and scored thanks to an RBI single from Degnan. The junior outfielder managed to steal second base and then scored by stealing third and advancing home on a throwing error.
Coyne and reliever Nate Kugler took over in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Penn only allowed one hit over the three-inning stretch, while Dartmouth gave up none.
Senior right-hander
Josh Katz came in to pitch in the seventh frame and held the Big Green to just one hit to send Penn back to the dish.
Pokrovsky tallied the hosts' final run of the day with a solo home run to right field, his first of the season.
Newburn secured his first collegiate save by retiring Rush, Austin Moran and Andersen.
