How It Happened
The Blue Hens were first to put a run on the board. Delaware's first two batters were walked, and it loaded the bases with one out when Vincent Davis was struck by a pitch. The first run of the day crossed home plate during the next at-bat when Jeremy Wolf was also hit by a pitch. Freshman left-hander
Ben Moulin was quickly called in from the bullpen to get Penn out of the inning.
Doug Marose earned the start for the visitors, and he retired the Quakers in 1-2-3 order.
Â
Both sides put a run on the board in the second frame. Anthony DeCesare began the inning with a leadoff double and later advanced to third on a passed ball. Moulin sat down the Blue Hens' next hitter, but Sal Mineo responded with an RBI single up the middle to send DeCesare home. Moulin faced loaded bases with two outs, but the San Clemente, Calif. native retired Wolf to close out the inning.
Â
Spaventa got Penn's wheels turning with a leadoff double and made it to third when Secretarski grounded out to second base. Ahearn was due up next and his RBI single up the middle allowed Spaventa to score to close the gap on Delaware (2-1).
Â
The Blue Hens logged a hit in the third inning, but freshman reliever
Nick Newburn managed to get Noah Burroughs to ground into a double play before striking out DeCesare. Ryan McLaughlin had similar success on the bump for the visitors, retiring the first three batters he faced.
Â
After a scoreless fourth frame, Delaware took a 4-1 advantage in the fifth. Wolf got the bats going with a double to left field and made his way home when Anthony Charles ripped an RBI single to first base. Charles tallied the Blue Hens' fourth run of the day on a sprint to home plate after a wild pitch.
Â
Delaware added its fifth run in the sixth inning, but the Quakers made it a 5-3 ballgame in the bottom half of the frame.
Three walks to begin the inning loaded the bases for the visitors and Mineo crossed the dish courtesy of an error by Penn. Fridgen guided the hosts out of the inning by getting Charles to ground into a double play.
Jake Pollaro took over on the mound for the Quakers' at-bats and Secretarski took advantage of the new arm with a leadoff double through the right side. The freshman eventually made his way to third on a wild pitch, followed by Ahearn drawing a walk.
Warner then stepped to the plate and reached first base on a fielder's choice, allowing Secretarski to score.
Ernie Echevarria and Taylor also drew walks, leaving Collins with some work to do at the dish. His sac fly to center field brought Warner home, but reliever Andrew Callaway navigated his way out of the frame with a groundout to shortstop.
The Red and Blue struggled to generate offense in the final three innings, registering just one hit. Delaware reliever Jackson Hulcher eventually secured a save and Marose was credited with the win.
