How It Happened
The Bears went with Jess Ackerman on the mound to start the contest, and he retired Secretarski and
Davis Baker to get things going. Spaventa made his way to first after walking, but Ahearn followed up with a flyout to left field.
Â
Logan Shepherd hit a leadoff single for Mercer but was later sent back to the dugout when Chris Katz reached first on a fielder's choice. Brant Baughcum proceeded to ground out to shortstop, and Braydon Kersey struck out swinging to end the first inning.
Penn took a 3-0 advantage in the second frame. Pokrovsky got the bats rolling with a single to short before Degnan was walked. Ackerman retired the Quakers' next two batters, leaving freshman
Jack Warner with work to do at the dish. The Bellevue, Wash., native took an initial strike prior to launching his first career hit over the wall in right field to grant the visitors a 3-0 lead.
Starting pitcher
Josh Katz notched two strikeouts in the bottom of the second to keep the Bears off the board.
The Red and Blue tacked on a fourth run in the top of the third stanza when Degnan's single to left brought home Ahearn, following hits from him and Pokrovsky.
Mercer put together a six-run third inning to take its first lead of the day. Nathan Rowland led off for the hosts and was struck by a pitch, which sent Shepherd to the plate. The first baseman was facing a 3-1 count before homering to right field to bring in Mercer's first two runs of the game.
Katz and Baughcum then registered a pair of base hits before Kersey and Titan Kamaka drove them in to make it a 5-3 ballgame. A single from Devyn McEachron later in the inning sent Kamaka home.
Penn tallied its fifth run in the fourth inning. Secretarski led off with a double to left center and eventually crossed home plate when Spaventa registered a single to right field.
The Bears notched a run of their own in the fourth, thanks to a single to left field by Kamaka, which sent Baughcum home. Relief pitcher
Aidan von Zuben struck out Mercer's final two batters to get out of the inning.
Neither side added any runs in the fifth frame, but Mercer scored runs in the sixth (1) and seventh (2) innings.
Michael Powell came in to pinch-hit for
Nick O'Brien in the top of the eighth inning, and his double to left field gave the Quakers some life. However, reliever Aidan Hayse retired Secretarski on a pop fly to second to escape the inning.
Freshman left-hander
Luke Pokrovsky took over on the mound in the bottom of the eighth, and he retired Mercer's lineup in 1-2-3 order to send the action to the ninth.
Hayse had his way during the Red and Blue's final at-bats. He registered back-to-back strikeouts to begin the inning before Ahearn knocked a single to right. Hayse eventually secured the victory for Mercer with his third strikeout of the day.
