#14 WLAX Drops First Contest to #7 Johns Hopkins, 15-9

PHILADELPHIA – The nationally ranked University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team dropped its first contest of the season on Saturday night, falling 15-9 to #7 Johns Hopkins at Franklin Field.

#7 Johns Hopkins went on a four-goal run stretching from the 5:22 mark of the third until 13:35 of the fourth to create a deficit too deep for #14 Penn to overcome to secure a 15-9 win.

Quaker Notemeal
*Catherine Berkery led the charge for the Quakers, scoring a team-high five goals.

*Lela Greene, Caroline Marotta, Mary Sack, Eden Welch also hit the back of the net for Penn in the battle.

*The Red and Blue dominated the X, with Maggie Banlowski winning nine and freshman Millie Batlett grabbing a career-high four.

*Sophomore Greene, Lellie King, and Sydney Patten caused two turnovers each.

*Goalkeeper Orly Sedransk stopped five shots in the cage.

How It Happened
The battle started with both teams exchanging two goals each, with freshman Sack and Greene scoring Penn's. JHU took over, going on a four-goal run that stretched from 4:26 of the first until 14:02 of the second to lead 6-2.

Junior Berkery netted a hat trick for the Quakers in the second to cause some motion, but the Blue Jays tacked on two more after their four-goal run to lead 8-5 at the break. Hopkins kept its streak going to open the third, but juniors Welch and Berkery tallied two-straight goals with 6:29 left of the third to cut the deficit to 9-7.

Unfortunately, the Blue Jays went on another four-goal run between the end of the third and the 13:35 mark of the fourth to create a six-goal cushion. Sophomore Marotta and attacker Berkery tried to muster some more offense for the Quakers, but their goals were negated by two more Blue Jays goals to put the game at its final tally of 15-9.
