Baseball Takes #24 Texas A&M to Extra Innings Before Falling, 2-1

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team scored first in Saturday's matchup with No. 24 Texas A&M, but a clutch double from Sawyer Farr extended the game to extra innings in the bottom of the ninth. The Aggies went on to walk it off in the bottom of the 11th inning on a bases-loaded walk to escape with a 2-1 victory.

Quaker Notemeal
*Penn is winless through its first two games, despite two days of encouraging pitching and defense from the Quakers.

*Gavin Collins went 3-for-5 and drove in Penn's lone run on a single to center field.

*Qwynn Ahearn, Jay Secretarski, Michael Powell and Gavin Degnan all recorded hits in the loss.

*Lefty starter Marty Coyne was excellent in his start, allowing just four hits, while posting a career-high nine strikeouts.

*Freshman left-hander Ben Moulin (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing the winning run. He struck out two batters in his collegiate debut but allowed three hits.

How It Happened
Weston Moss started on the bump for the Aggies and retired the first three hitters he faced. Coyne followed suit by sitting down Texas A&M's initial two batters, before Boston Kellner grounded out into a fielder's choice.

Neither side got anything going in the second, as the Red and Blue went down in order. Terrence Kiel II got on base for the Aggies with a single to left center, but Coyne sent back-to-back Aggies back to the dugout to get out of the inning.

The Quakers took the lead in the third stanza. Junior infielder Michael Powell began the inning with a single but was later caught stealing second. Jay Secretarski and Qwynn Ahearn replied with singles of their own to grant Penn runners in scoring position. Collins was next up and he dialed up a single to left center that saw Secretarski score. Coyne ended the third inning in three up three down fashion.

Innings four, five, six and seven only featured four hits between both teams, respectively.

With Moss and Coyne's days being done, relievers Juan Vargas and Connor Darling began to battle in the eighth. Vargas made quick work of Penn's batters due up and Darling let up a sole hit in the frame, while striking out Kellner and Bear Harrison to send proceedings to the ninth inning.

Vargas retired the Quakers 1-2-3 to send the Aggies to the plate with a chance to tie the game. Kiel II led off and was walked by Darling and eventually reached second on a wild pitch.  The Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J. native sat down Texas A&M's next two batters leaving the contest's fate in the hands of Farr. Facing a 3-2 count, Farr hit a bullet down the right-field line that sent Kiel II home to knot the game at one apiece.

After a scoreless 10th inning, Aggies' reliever Clayton Freshcorn put away Collins, Davis Baker and Jarrett Pokrovsky. Three back-to-back singles from the hosts loaded the bases, leaving Farr the chance to win it at the plate. Moulin ended up walking Farr and Texas A&M walked it off for the second straight outing.
