How It Happened
SET 1: Maybe it was the early start (noon Eastern), but UC Irvine came out sluggish on Sunday and Penn took immediate advantage. The Quakers scored the first six points in the match, then responded to a three-point UCI run with four in a row to go up by 10-3. Irvine never got closer than six the rest of the way, and the margin was double digits when a Murray kill made it 16-6. Sanger had four kills on eight attacks, a .500 hitting set, while Garner and Kerstetter had three kills each and Kerstetter had her four blocks. Pollock came up with nine digs in the first set.
SET 2: Another fast start set the tone in the second, Penn scoring the first three points and then answering a two-point UCI run with six in a row to go in front 9-2. The teams essentially traded points to 16-8, at which point Penn reeled off a 9-3 run to close things out. Garner was a monster, with seven kills and a .600 hitting set, while Siskin and Murray had four kills apiece (Siskin hitting .800, Murray .571).
SET 3: Irvine opened the scoring in this set—the only lead the Anteaters would have all day—but Penn scored the next four and never looked back. The Quakers' lead was 7-5 when Murray sandwiched a pair of kills around two Siskin aces as part of a 5-0 run that got the margin to 12-5. The Anteaters never got closer than six the rest of the way, and Penn punctuated the victory with the last six points in the match as Garner put down two kills and Siskin served up two more aces in the final run. Garner and Murray had four kills each in the set, Garner hitting .444 and Murray .250, while Pollock had nine more digs and Moore finished the set with 10 assists and seven digs.
