How It Happened
Yale got to
Josh Katz in the first inning. After getting on twice with their first three batters, the Bulldogs executed a double steal to put runners in scoring position.
Ernie Echevarria couldn't get to a ball in the dirt, allowing the man from third to score. A sacrifice fly brought home Jake Williams to make 2-0 before the Quakers batted.
The runs piled on for Yale, scoring three more in the following inning. Two batters reached base safely with one out. Katz induced a shallow popup, but
Davis Baker couldn't make the catch. A sacrifice fly and a two-RBI single cleared the bases, marking the end of Katz's outing at 1.2 innings pitched.
Jake Moss came in for relief and made the final out of the inning.
After a 1-2-3 third inning, the Bulldogs once again pressured the Quakers in the fourth. Moss walked the first two batters but got out unscathed with three consecutive outs.
On the other side, first-team All-Ivy selection Colton Shaw was nails to start the game. He retired the first 12 Quakers, recording two strikeouts.
Gavin Collins was the first Penn batter to reach base safely, singling in the bottom of the fifth inning. His efforts were to no avail as Echevarria hit into a double play the next at-bat.
Moss found himself again in a jam in the sixth inning. Back-to-back walks set up two runners on with no outs. A sacrifice bunt by Jeff Pierantoni moved the runners to second and third. Like the fourth inning, Moss retired the final two batters to end his relief appearance.
Penn got into scoring position for the first time in the sixth inning.
Ryan Taylor grounded it past the outstretched arm of Shaw for a single. He then stole second base for his 20th swipe of the season. His efforts were rewarded as
Connor Chavez ripped one past Shaw for an RBI single.
In the seventh inning,
Thomas Shurtleff came in for Moss. The second batter got on base after Chavez overthrew a grounder to
Nick Spaventa. Tommy Martin then pulled a ball over the right field wall for the 7-1 lead.
The Quakers had a chance to chip at the deficit in the bottom half of the frame. Baker led off with a walk and reached third base on two wild pitches. Spaventa came up with two runners on but flew out to end the inning.
In the ninth inning,
Will Tobin came in to pitch in relief. After a leadoff hit-by-pitch, he set down the side.
Yale made the call to the bullpen after eight innings of one-run ball from Shaw. The Quakers walked twice against Ethan Lewis prompting the Bulldogs to make a quick change to Mick Kelley. Spaventa hit a two-out RBI single to cut into the deficit but Penn ended its season with a 7-2 loss.
