PHILADELPHIA – Make it seven straight wins for the University of Pennsylvania baseball team. Penn had complete control of Sunday's series finale, rolling past Harvard 14-4 at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium.
With the win, the Quakers (8-9, 3-0 Ivy) clinch the series and the sweep against the Crimson (0-16, 0-3 Ivy) heading into Liberty Bell Classic play on Tuesday and then a road series at Dartmouth next weekend.
Quaker Notemeal
*Penn opens Ivy play with a series sweep for the second consecutive season. Last year, the victim was Brown—taking place exactly a year ago—at Tommy Lasorda Field.
*The Quakers' seven-game win streak is the team's longest since Penn won 10 in a row from April 29-June 3, 2023. That streak started with a 4-3 victory over Cornell and lasted all the way through the Ivy League Tournament and into the NCAA regional where the Quakers topped Auburn and Samford to advance to the regional final.
*10 runs is Penn's second-largest margin of victory this season after beating Lehigh by 17 runs (19-2) on Wednesday in Bethlehem. In the Quakers' last regular season Ivy game, they beat Dartmouth on May 4, 2024 by a score of 24-5 in eight innings. That margin was 19 runs.
*
Jarrett Pokrovsky was an offensive force for Penn on Sunday, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, three runs scored, and a walk. He added more extra-base hits to his ledger for the week with two doubles.
*
Gavin Collins went 2-for-3 at the dish with two runs, three RBIs, and two walks.
*
Ryan Taylor (3-for-5) had a three-hit afternoon for the Quakers, driving in two runs and scoring a pair.
*
Gavin Degnan (2-for-5) also put in a two-double afternoon with two RBIs and a run.
*
Josh Katz (2-2) continues his strong last few games by earning his second win of the campaign. He allowed just one run on one hit in two innings of work.
*
Tommy Delany struck out three batters in 1.1 frames, surrendering just two knocks.
*Pokrovsky had elite offensive numbers in Penn's three wins over Harvard, batting .538 (7-for-13) with three doubles, four runs, and two RBIs. He slugged .769 and reached base at a .600 clip.
*
Connor Chavez batted .500 (4-for-8) and drove in two runs. Collins hit .455 (5-for-11) with a home run, a double, and six RBIs.
*Cerwinski appeared in two games over the weekend, not allowing an earned run in three innings of work.
How It Happened
Penn struck first in in the bottom of the opening inning with Collins singling through the right side and scoring Pokrovsky to take a 1-0 lead.
Harvard had strong second and third innings, taking a 2-1 lead in the third on George Cooper's solo homer and then doubling it at 3-1 on an RBI fielder's choice.
That's when the Penn bats came alive again in the third and fourth innings, scoring five runs on three singles and an RBI double for Degnan. Collins started the run with a two-run single down the left-field line that brought in both Baker and Pokrovsky. The Quakers led, 6-3, heading into the fifth.
The Crimson tacked on their fourth and final run in the fifth inning against Katz, making it a 6-4 ballgame.
The seventh inning saw Penn hang a five-spot on Harvard pitching when Ahearn started the affair with a sacrifice fly, which brought home Baker with the bases loaded. Three runs came in to score when Taylor singled through the left side to drive home Pokrovsky and Spaventa laced a two-run double down the left-field line, scoring both Taylor and Collins. Degnan drove in Spaventa on a double to left—his second of the game—to make it an 11-4 game.
Three more runs came across to score in the eighth on Taylor's RBI single to right field, Collins scoring on a 5-4-3 double play, and
Ernie Echevarria taking advantage of a fielding error to score the 14th run of the contest.
John Cerwinski and
Connor Darling combined for three shutout innings of relief to shut the door as the Quakers came away with a lopsided, 14-4 victory.
