Baseball Routs Lehigh Behind Four Round Trippers, 19-2

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team slugged 19 runs on 21 hits in a 19-2 victory in seven innings at Lehigh Wednesday afternoon at J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park. Penn scored 16 unanswered runs from the fourth to the seventh innings before the game was called on a 10-run rule.

The Quakers improve to 5-9 overall heading into Ivy League play while the Mountain Hawks fall to 10-7.

Quaker Notemeal
*Penn extended its win streak over Lehigh to eight straight games dating back to the 2013 season. The Quakers are now 87-32-4 all-time against the Mountain Hawks.

*19 is the most runs scored by Penn against Lehigh since 1912, when the Quakers earned an 18-0 victory.

*The Quakers have won four straight games, the team's longest streak since winning five in a row from March 16-24, 2024. That streak also started with two wins against Lafayette and another against Lehigh before sweeping Brown at Tommy Lasorda Field to begin Ivy play.

*Penn had a pair of four-hit performances from Nick Spaventa (4-for-5) and Michael Powell (4-for-5). Spaventa scored three runs and drove in two, while Powell scored four runs and had two RBIs on three doubles.

*Ryan Taylor went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs and two RBIs, while Davis Baker drove in four runs.

*Ernie Echevarria was 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBIs.

*Davis Baker, Jarrett Pokrovsky, Spaventa, and Cole McGonigal all hit home runs for the Quakers. McGonigal's three-run shot was his first homer since Feb. 26, 2023 at South Carolina.

*Nine of Penn's 19 hits went for extra bases.

*Aidan von Zuben (1-0) earned the win in his first career start. He struck out three batters over two innings, allowing just one run on one hit.

*After Andrew Miehe allowed one run on two hits in two innings of work, the rest of the bullpen pitched three scoreless innings. Marshall Mott and Tommy Delany both struck out a batter each, while Thomas Shurtleff shut the door in the seventh.

How It Happened
Penn's bats went down 1-2-3 to begin the first inning, while the Mountain Hawks got on the board first in the bottom of the frame on Owen Walewander's RBI single. Von Zuben struck out two in a row to close the inning.

Pokrovsky led off the second with a tank to left field, tying the game up at 1-1. Collins was put on first by way of a hit-by-pitch and later scored on a groundout to give Penn a 2-1 edge.

Von Zuben set down Lehigh 1-2-3 in the second to bring up Penn to the plate. Chavez (hit by pitch) and Taylor (walk) got on base to begin the third inning as Baker drove in Chavez to take a 3-1 lead. The Quakers left two runners on base in the inning.

With Andrew Miehe pitching in relief of von Zuben, Lehigh led off its half of the third with a solo shot to left field off the bat of Whitlinger to cut into Penn's 3-2 lead. Miehe got two quick outs after that and struck out Betances to end the threat.

Spaventa singled up the middle to begin the fourth and Powell doubled to right to put runners on second and third. Echevarria came through with a two-run single to left field to extend the lead to 5-2. An RBI triple to right center from Taylor made it a 6-2 game, the third run to come across in the frame. The fourth run of the fourth scored when Baker grounded in Taylor, now 7-2.

Miehe pitched a scoreless fourth inning despite giving up a double down the right field line.

Collins led off the fifth with a single while Spaventa drove him in on a two-run bomb over the left center field fence to go ahead, 9-2. Taylor's single brought in Powell and then a two-run homer to center field from Baker made it a 12-2 game. Ahearn walked and Pokrovsky struck out to cap a five-run frame.

Mott pitched a scoreless fifth inning, retiring the Mountain Hawks in order.

Penn began the sixth with three hits—singles for Collins and Spaventa, and an RBI double for Powell (his third of the day). Echevarria singled home two more runs to extend the lead to 15-2. With the bases loaded, Pokrovsky singled to center field and drove in Echevarria to make it a 16-2 lead.

Delany walked two runners, but left them both on base in the sixth after punching out Davis.

In the seventh, Powell picked up his fourth hit of the afternoon, advancing to second on Echevarria's walk. Cole McGonigal swatted a three-run homer to center field, making it a 19-2 game. Connor McCabe pinch hit, lacing his first career hit—a double—in his first collegiate at bat with one away.

Shurtleff pitched the home half of the seventh and quickly induced a 4-6-3 double play. He got Quinn to fly out to left field to end the game, Penn victorious 19-2.
