Ahearn’s Grand Slam, Strong Relief Pitching Guide Baseball to 12-7 Win at Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team battled adversity, got some timely hitting and quality pitching en route to a 12-7 victory over Lafayette Friday afternoon at Kamine Stadium.
 
The Quakers improve to 2-9 on the year, while the Leopards fall to 2-14.

*Penn snapped a two-game skid and earned its second victory of the 2025 season on Friday. The Quakers have won three of the last four meetings against the Leopards.

*Ryan Taylor led the Penn offense with a 3-for-5 afternoon in the leadoff spot for the first time this season. He also scored three runs. and had a triple.

*Qwynn Ahearn's elite offensive production continued on Friday, batting 2-for-4 with a grand slam home run, five RBIs and three runs scored. He also walked once. Ahearn is batting .321 with a team-high three homers, nine RBIs, and an OPS of 1.049.

*Nick O'Brien had the Quakers' other multi-RBI game with two.

*Taylor, Jarrett Pokrovsky, and Andrew Ruggeri all had stolen bases.

*Penn's defense recorded a pair of double plays and committed just one error.

*Tommy Delany (1-0) picked up his first win of the year after recording a scoreless sixth inning in relief of Noah Millikan. Millikan allowed five runs on nine hits over five frames, but struck out seven batters.

*Connor Darling and John Cerwinski both struck out two Leopards.
 
How It Happened
Penn starter Noah Millikan allowed two singles, but struck out a pair of Leopards in the bottom of the first to get out of the frame scoreless.
 
The Quakers scored their first two runs of the day in the second on Nick O'Brien's two-run double down the right-field line, bringing across Pokrovsky and Spaventa. Millikan then went on and punched out two more batters to maintain to their 2-0 cushion.
 
Penn took a 5-0 lead in the third when it scored three more runs, thanks to an RBI single from Gavin Collins, who then scored on an error and then Michael Powell recorded his first-career hit, an RBI single to left that brought home Ahearn.
 
Lafayette scored its first run of the game in the bottom half of the third inning.
 
Chavez, Taylor, and Baker went down 1-2-3 in the fourth and Penn's bats were silenced once again in the fifth inning.
 
The Leopards reeled off four runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth inning, tying the game up at 5-5.
 
After the Quakers had no luck at the plate for the third straight frame in the sixth, Penn finally broke through after Chavez and Taylor led off with back-to-back singles. Baker was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Collins. He struck out, bringing up Ahearn, who launched a grand slam to left field, plating four runs to re-take the lead, 9-5.
 
Lafayette was able to get two more runs and trim the deficit to 9-7 in the bottom of the eighth, as John Cerwinski came in to the game in relief, striking out the final batter with two runners on.
 
Penn picked up some insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning with Taylor scoring on an error—getting on base via a leadoff triple—and Spaventa singling in Caden Fahy to go up, 11-7. Ahearn ended up scoring on a wild pitch to make it a 12-7 ballgame.
 
Cerwinski retired the final three batters he faced to claim the victory.
