PHILADELPHIA— The University of Pennsylvania men's and women's squash teams both dominated their first Ivy League outings of the season over Yale at the Penn Squash Center Sunday afternoon.
Penn's top-ranked men's team took an 8-1 victory over second-ranked Yale, completing a weekend sweep of the Bulldogs and No. 4 Trinity. The third-ranked women also defeated the No. 7 Bulldogs by an 8-1 score, turning the page on their loss to the second-ranked Bantams from yesterday. The men move to 11-0 on the season, while the women are now 8-1.
For the men,
Nathan Kueh (#5) and
Salman Khalil (#1) fought through four games each to put the Quakers ahead in the first wave of matchups. The one-two punch set the tone early for the Red and Blue, both athletes maintaining their undefeated records on the season.
Abdelrahman Dweek (#8), Marwan Abdelsalam (#4), and
Nick Spizzirri (#2) all swept their opponents, earning a point each for the Quakers.
Dana Santry battled through some long rallies to win his match in four games, only losing game three to Yale's Max Forster.
Varun Chitturi won his first two games, then held on after a loss in game three to prevail over Yale's Merill Wurts in game four.
Omar Hafez (#3) fought through five games to secure the win for the Quakers, with one game going to 13 points. The Hafez match with Lachlan Sutton was a thrilling one, full of physical play and requiring a few stoppages for injury and recovery. Hafez was able to pull through late in game five to maintain his undefeated record on the year and win the fifth point for the Red and Blue.
On the women's courts, the first wave of matches resulted in Malak Khafagy, Allie Stoddard, and Yoshna Singh putting the Quakers up 3-0 early. Sohaila Ismail, Franka Vidovic, and Hailey Wong took the courts next, all of them earning a point to clinch the victory for the Red and Blue.
Malak Khafagy, Allie Stoddard, Sohaila Ismail, Hailey Wong, and Savannah Ingledew all swept their matches in three games, making quick work of the Bulldogs in their Ivy League opener.
The most thrilling match of the afternoon for the women came in the third wave on Court 6. Natasha Pensler earned a win over Lindsay Westerfield, battling through five games with the final game going to 12 points.
