How It Happened
Sophomore
Jack-Ryan Jeremiah started the scoring chances in the match, slamming one from the right of the field three minutes in that landed just shy of Sebastian Cutler-DeJesus' crease. Three minutes later, Villanova tried to get one past Falcon, but
Connor Dawson blocked the shot before any damage could be done.
Jeremiah tried to muster some more offense in the eighth minute, rocketing a shot off a corner that went high above the net. A minute later, senior Korzeniowski capitalized off a free kick three minutes later, accepting a feed from Cayelli that went bar down to push Penn ahead 1-0.
Villanova retaliated quickly in the 15th minute, as Penn Alumni
Michael teDuits '23 shot one at the top of Falcon's net to tie the match at one. Five minutes later, the Wildcats added another to the board off a Jason Bouregy tally to take a 2-1 advantage.
Both teams were silent for the next few minutes after Bouregy's goal, with the ball being exchanged on both sides of the field. Luckily, sophomore Sullivan was able to notch his first goal as a Quaker to tie the game up at two during the 28th minute off Cayelli's second dish of the night. Sullivan's goal opened a floodgate of shots as the Cats attempted a blocked one right off the kickoff. A minute later, on the other end of the field, Korzeniowski and Cayelli both tallied blocked shots to try and give the Quakers an advantage.
The final shots of the first came within the last ten minutes as Jorge Garcia posted a blocked shot in the 36th minute, followed by
Jack Wagoner attempting a blocked shot in the 40th minute.
The Quakers came out of the break with a point to prove, adding three quick shots to the board in the first three minutes of the half. Freshman
Marco Bottene attempted two shots, with one slammed towards Cutler-Dejesus that was saved to open the half. Two minutes later,
Mathis Varin got his first look at the ball in the match but was ultimately blocked. Villanova recorded their first shot of the second in the 53rd minute, but the ball sailed high before it could be registered on goal.
Forward Korzeniowski tried to add some offense to the board with less than 30 minutes left in the half, but his shot was deflected by a Villanova defender. Penn kept the shots going, as Sullivan, Bottene, and
Brandon Curran added shots between the 63rd and 65th minutes, but only Bottene's reached the Wildcats' keeper.
Goalkeeper Falcon made his first and only save of the night in the 71st minute off a shot from Jordan Canica to hold the match at 2-2. With the clock running down, the Quaker offense applied the pressure as Korzeniowski added two more shots to the board in the 78th and 79th minutes.
Villanova tried to catch a spark with five minutes left of the match, tallying back-to-back shots, but both were misdirected before they could reach Falcon. The final shot of the quarter came directly after Villanova's consecutive shots from Cayelli, but it was unfortunately blocked to keep the game at a 2-2 final.
