CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team's season came to a close in a 12-inning 10-9 thriller against St. John's on Saturday afternoon at Davenport Field at Disharoon Park.
 
Penn (24-25) scored seven runs in the seventh inning to try to squeeze out a win in the consolation bracket, but St. John's tallied two runs in the ninth and 12th to move on to Sunday's round of the Charlottesville Regional.
 
Quaker Notemeal
*This was the Quakers' fourth extra innings matchup of the season and the longest since the 11-inning battle with Brown back in March.
 
*Senior Wyatt Henseler continued to make history, as he tied the single-season hits record (a record he currently holds) with his 72nd of the year.
 
*Davis Baker and Carson Ozmer led the Red and Blue's bats, going 4-for-6 at the plate. Ozmer also co-led the offense with two scored runs.
 
*Catcher Asa Wilson tallied a team-high three RBI to keep the Quakers in the game offensively. 
 
*Five pitchers in Ryan Dromboski, Danny Heintz, Ozmer, Eli Trop, and Will Tobin appeared on the mound against the Red Storm. Senior Ozmer led the charge with four strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.
 
*Tobin (2-4) was charged with the loss after allowing one run off a hit in 1 2/3 innings pitched to finish his junior year campaign.
 
How It Happened
Penn's bats got to work quickly in the game, as Baker and Ryan Taylor got on base with two outs in the first, but both were ultimately left stranded.
 
Just like the Quakers, St. John's started the game off hot as Jackson Tucker singled to centerfield to eventually score the first run off Dromboski as he stole second, then reached home off back-to-back flyouts to push the Red Storm ahead by one after the first.
 
The Red and Blue retaliated in the second as Gavin Collins doubled to left field off a full count and then advanced to third off a single from Ozmer. Nate Polo brought his fellow outfielder home off a sac fly to even the game at 1-1.
 
Both teams were kept off the board in the third, with Nick Spaventa and Taylor being left on base while junior Dromboski put the Red Storm down in order to close out the inning.
 
St. John's took the lead in the fourth after putting Penn down in order and then tacking a pair of runs to the board to lead 3-1.
 
The Quakers tried to get things going in the fifth as freshman Spaventa walked to load the bases with Henseler and Baker already on board, but a fielder's choice ended the offense in the inning.
 
The Red Storm kept their scoring going in the bottom of the fifth, off a two-run homer from Garrett Scavelli to bump the lead to 5-1 and end Dromboski's day as Heintz came in relief to get the final two outs.
 
Both defenses held fairly strong in the sixth, with St. John's only scoring a run to push the gap to four, but the seventh inning made up for it as the Quakers added seven runs to the board to lead 9-6. A throwing error by the Red Storm's shortstop on Spaventa's at-bat opened the floodgates, as the freshman, Collins, Ozmer, pinch runner Calvin Brown, Wilson, Connor Chavez, and Henseler all scored to give Penn its first and only lead of the game. Heintz and the defense carried the momentum into the bottom half of the seventh to keep the gap at three.
 
Ultimately,  A two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth from St. John's Tucker kept the game interesting as he slashed the lead to one heading into the ninth.
 
Third baseman Henseler tried to score a security run in the opener of the ninth off a walk, but a double play ended the opportunity for Penn. St. John's went on to score its second home run of the outing to tie the game at nine and force extra innings.
 
The first two extra innings ended similarly to the first nine, but the 12th was tense for both teams. Baker walked and stole second to sit in scoring position, followed by Taylor being walked to keep Penn's hopes alive, but a pop-up ended the inning before the Quakers could do any offensive damage.
 
St. John's went on to take the game and advance in the regional during the bottom of the 12th as the Red Storm hit a single that pushed the game to its final tally of 10-9.
