Yale Tops Baseball, 12-3, To Close Road Series

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team got out to an early 3-0 lead, but Yale scored 12 unanswered runs to come away with a 12-3 victory to close out the series Sunday afternoon at George H.W. Bush '48 Field.

The Quakers (13-14, 5-4 Ivy) still win the series after taking two from the Bulldogs (8-16, 4-5 Ivy) on Saturday. Penn has won two out three Ivy series to begin the season with four remaining.

How It Happened
Ryan Taylor, leading off for the first time in 2024, started the day with a leadoff single up the middle and ended up stealing second base. An infield single for Wyatt Henseler put runners on first and second, but he was thrown out trying to steal the bag.

Right-hander Danny Heintz, making an appearance for the first time since Feb. 26, 2023, looked solid in his first (and only) inning of work. He retired the Yale side in order with a strikeout to head to the second.

Penn got its first three runners on base in the second inning as Jarrett Pokrovsky singled and both Carson Ozmer and Calvin Brown walked. Alex Gabauer also reached, but got on via an error, which scored Pokrovsky to take a 1-0 lead. Taylor ripped a single to left to score Ozmer and Brown came home to score on Davis Baker's RBI single with the Quakers leading 3-0.

Josh Katz took over for Heintz in the second, allowing a leadoff single to Jake Williams, a fielder's choice and then a walk to begin the frame. A second walk loaded the bases and the Bulldogs entered the run column, 3-1, on a sacrifice fly.

After Penn was retired 1-2-3 to begin the third, Katz got into a little bit of trouble in the inning, surrendering two singles—the latter of which was an RBI knock to make it a 3-2 game—a hit-by-pitch and walk to bring in Marty Coyne in relief. Yale took a 4-3 lead on Tommy Martin's two-run single up the middle.

Brown started the fourth inning with a leadoff single, but a GDP and an Alex Gabauer groundout retired the side.

The Bulldogs reeled off a single against Coyne to lead off the home fourth, followed by a walk while the leadoff batter stole third base. An RBI single brought home a fifth run as Yale extended its lead to 5-3. The Elis doubled the lead, 6-3, on a one-out wild pitch and then an RBI double made it seven unanswered runs, 7-3.

John Cerwinski started the fifth inning on the mound for the Quakers, surrendering the Bulldogs' eighth consecutive run of the contest on a two-out RBI triple off the left-center field wall. Yale made it nine straight on a bunt single off Will Tobin, taking a 9-3 cushion.

Gavin Collins walked to begin the sixth inning but was immediately retired on a fielder's choice for Jarrett Pokrovsky. Ozmer and Brown recorded back-to-back swinging punchouts to end the frame.

In the bottom of the sixth, Will Tobin recorded Penn's first 1-2-3 inning since the first stanza, setting the Bulldogs down in order by way of a flyout, popout and swinging strikeout.

Penn left one runner on in the top half of the seventh inning after Taylor recorded his third hit of the game—a single to the third baseman—but Baker struck out swinging to end the threat.

Tobin pitched his third straight scoreless inning in the seventh to bring the Quakers up to bat in the eighth. Henseler led off the frame with his second infield single of the game and Ozmer was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with two outs. Brown struck out swinging to end the inning.

Edward Sarti got two quick outs to begin the Yale eighth inning, but then allowed a single to Jeff Pierantoni, who stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. The Bulldogs tacked on three more runs on four hits against Sarti and Jake Moss to push ahead further and eventually secure a 12-3 victory.
