How It Happened
Freshman
Josh Katz started off the game strong in the bottom of the first inning with three straight punchouts, setting the Quakers up nicely for the top of the second. With two outs, a
Gavin Collins single and a
Cole McGonigal double down the right-field line weren't enough to bring runs across to score.
Penn took the game's first lead on a two-run double to right field for
Nick Spaventa, as both
Connor Chavez and
Wyatt Henseler came home on the play. The Quakers took an early 2-0 lead.
Columbia quickly answered back in the third inning on back-to-back doubles—the latter of which brought two runs in to score—and tied the game up at 2-2.
Lion pitching struck out the Penn side in the top of the fourth scoring two more runs in the bottom of the inning on yet another double, as Griffin Palfrey gave Columbia the 4-2 edge.
Davis Baker, who singled on with two outs in the fifth, scored the Quakers' third run of the day on a Henseler double down the left-field line, making it a 4-3 Columbia advantage.
With
John Cerwinski in the game for Katz (and later
Marty Coyne), the Lions scored four runs on four hits, leaving two runners on to take an 8-3 lead heading into the sixth.
Penn ended up cutting the Columbia lead in half in the sixth on
Qwynn Ahearn's fielder's choice, but left the bases loaded to keep it 8-4.
After Coyne set the Lions down 1-2-3 in the sixth inning, Henseler hit his 12th homer of the year in the seventh to cut the Columbia lead back to 8-5.
The Lions tacked on a ninth run off Cole Hage's RBI triple in the seventh inning, but Henseler answered back with a two-run double to right field in the eighth, Penn trailing, 9-7.
Eli Trop struck out two Lions in the bottom of the eighth to set up a possible comeback in the ninth, but Columbia retired the side in order to end the contest.
