Gustav Detter Named Assistant Coach With M/W Squash Programs

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's and women's squash programs have added Gustav Detter as an assistant coach. The announcement was made by Penn's Director of Squash and head women's coach, Jack Wyant, as well as head men's coach Gilly Lane.

A former All-America collegiate player who won four College Squash Association (CSA) national championships as a player, Detter comes to Penn with an extensive background coaching at the high school and middle school levels.

"Quite simply, we have hired a CSA legend," said Wyant, who has been coaching at Penn since 2004. "We are extremely lucky that Gustav made the decision to transition back to college squash. Our men and women will benefit greatly from his enthusiasm, experience, and positive personality."

"We are extremely excited to add Gustav to the Penn Squash family," said Lane, who led the Penn men to the CSA Potter Cup (national championship) last year, the program's first. "He represents all the qualities that we look for in a coach. I got to see first-hand how hard he competed, as we were contemporaries in college, so I know he will immediately bring toughness and determination with him to both teams. It is so great to have him wearing the Red and Blue!"

Detter played his college squash at Trinity, helping the Bantams win the CSA title every year from 2006-09. He was a four-time CSA All-America selection, runner-up at the CSA Individual Championships as a junior in 2008, and recipient of the CSA's prestigious Skillman Award as a senior in 2009. (Lane was the 2007 recipient of the Skillman.)

Prior to arriving in the States at Trinity, Detter was the Swedish Junior champion at the U15, U17 and U19 levels. Following his collegiate career, Detter was the Swedish National Champion and member of the Swedish National Team. He also won the New England Open during his professional career. Detter's coaching experience includes stints at Poly Prep Country Day, the Berkshire School, Millbrook School, and the Apawamis Club in Rye, N.Y.

"I would like to thank the University of Pennsylvania, especially Jack and Gilly, for affording me the opportunity to realize a dream come true: the opportunity to work with an esteemed group of squash players and coaches," said Detter. "I look forward to helping current and future Quakers grow as both athletes and citizens. Although I was born in Sweden, the city of Philadelphia has a special place in my heart—my wife was born here. and we were married at Old Swedes' Church down in South Philly. I am excited to return to the area and be a part of the University's campus community."
