The Cornell Series
It's been all Penn against Cornell in the series as of late, the Quakers winning each of the last nine matchups dating back to the 2013 season. The Red and Blue recorded shutouts over the Big Red the last two times, a 17-0 victory in Ithaca last season and a 63-0 rout the year prior. Penn has outscored Cornell, 202-28, in the last five meetings.
Â
Tough Start
The Quakers didn't look like themselves in the first game against Chestnut Hill last Friday, struggling to get much of anything going on offense in a 27-10 defeat to the Griffins on the road. However, Penn looked pretty solid on the defensive end despite the output, with linebacker
Charles Tauckus leading the way with 10 tackles with six solos and two TFLs.
Matt McKillop had nine stops while
Ryan Horvath added eight.

Earning The Accolades
Junior
Adrian Montemayor turned heads last season when he made his mark on the gridiron, ultimately earning the title of CSFL Special Teams Player of the Year. He picked right back up where he left off with another solid performance at CHC. Montemayor made six tackles with a forced fumble, fumble recovery and a punt block. He drilled a 22-yard field goal to bring the Quakers back within three points in the closing stages of the second quarter. For his night, he was named CSFL Special Teams Player of the Week.
Â
New Face Under Center
Ty Scherer made his first career start for the Quakers last Friday evening at quarterback, tallying 22 carries for 65 yards on the ground and adding 130 yards on 10 completions through the air. Freshman
Andy Falletta broke through in the passing game with three catches for 54 yards in his collegiate debut.
Â
Year Three
It's the third year at the helm for William R. Wagner Head Coach of Sprint Football
Jerry McConnell. Last season, the Quakers went 3-4 overall and once again competed for a CSFL South division crown right until the final whistle.
Â
All-CSFL
Eight All-CSFL selections from a year ago return to the program in 2023, including second teamers
Jake Wang,
Cam Janock and
Jake Inserra. Returning honorable mention honorees
Alex Schrier,

Knowing The Opponent
The Nick Quartaro era of Cornell Sprint Football nearly got started with a victory, as the Big Red fell to Caldwell last Friday evening, 16-14, in Ithaca. Quartaro's team trailed the Cougars, 16-2, well into the fourth quarter before staging a furious rally. Cornell scored a touchdown with 6:15 to play in the final stanza before scoring another with 4:05 to go, only to have the two-point attempt to tie fail.
Â
Senior QB Cooper Wise completed 18 of his 36 pass attempts for 152 yards while running back Ralph Fleuranvil finished with 66 yards rushing and a touchdown on 15 attempts. Linebacker Billy Turner led the Big Red defense with a career-high 11 tackles while Jaden Queen had two pass breakups.
