Andrew Douglas CAS'21, MPA'22 Wins U.S. Men’s Squash Championship

PHILADELPHIA – Andrew Douglas CAS'21, MPA'22, a four-time first-team All-American and first-team All-Ivy selection for the University of Pennsylvania men's squash team from 2018-22, won the 2023 S.L. Green U.S. Men's Championship last Saturday night at the Specter Squash Center.

Douglas' run to the title started with a 5-2-3 victory over Graham Bonnell, a former two-time first-team All-NESCAC selection at Bates, in the Round of 32 on Tuesday afternoon.

Tuesday evening's Round of 16 match against former Princeton team member Cole Becker ended in a 7-7-7 victory for Douglas, setting up a quarterfinal match on Wednesday against Faraz Khan, a University of Rochester alum.

Douglas dispatched the former Yellow Jacket with a 9-1-9 victory, putting him in Thursday's semifinals against Shahjahan Khan, the top-ranked American in the world squash rankings and the No. 1-ranked player in the tournament.

After taking the first two games 11-8 and 11-5, Douglas dropped the third and fourth games by matching 11-8 scores, setting up a winner-take-all fifth game. Douglas trailed 5-4, 6-5, and 7-6 but took four of five points down the stretch, giving him two match ball opportunities at 10-8. Khan rallied to knot the game at 10-10, but Douglas responded with two straight of his own, closing out the nearly 80-minute affair.

Friday's final matched Douglas with Spencer Lovejoy, a former three-time College Squash Association (CSA) All-America at Yale, with whom Douglas currently lives and trains.

Douglas took the first game, 11-8, Lovejoy took the second, 11-6, and Douglas took the third, 11-6, leaving him one game from the title. Lovejoy took the first point of the fourth game, but Douglas took 11 of the next 12, closing out his championship in dominant fashion.

In addition to Douglas, current Penn senior Dillon Huang and freshman Hao Cui also competed in the event, with Huang advancing to the quarterfinals before falling to Shahjahan Khan.
