HOW IT HAPPENED
As was the case last night, Penn took a 2-0 lead four batters into the game.
Ben Miller doubled with two out and nobody on, keeping the inning going for Henseler, who, like Miller did 24 hours prior, went deep over the left field wall.
Tobin allowed a leadoff single in the first, but picked the runner off, then retired the next two batters in order.
In the top of the third, three straight one-out singles from Miller, Henseler, and
Calvin Brown loaded the bases, but a strikeout and tag play at the plate after a passed ball kept Penn from adding to its lead.
After Nicholls State tied the game in the bottom of the third, Penn went right back in front in the fourth.
Drew Rogers singled and
Davis Baker reached on a bunt single to start the inning.
Ryan Taylor reached on a one-out infield single to load the bases before
Jackson Appel dropped a single into right field, plating Rogers. Baker later scampered home on a wild pitch.
Penn tacked on another run in the fifth when
Jarrett Pokrovsky doubled to right-center with one out and Baker knocked him in with a two-out double to left-center, though he was thrown out trying to stretch the hit to a triple to end the inning.
The Colonels pulled back within one, 5-4, with two in the sixth, though reliever
Carson Ozmer stranded a pair of runners to keep Penn in front. The game remained 5-4 heading to the bottom of the ninth, where
Eli Trop closed out the game for his first save of the year, striking out the side on 12 pitches.
Up Next
Penn will travel to New Orleans tomorrow and wrap their Spring Break trip with a three-game weekend series against Tulane.
