Three-Run Tenth Lifts Baseball Past Lehigh, 7-4

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A back-and-forth affair resulted in some late-inning magic for the University of Pennsylvania baseball team and a three-run top of the 10th inning did wonders in a 7-4 victory over Lehigh at J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park Wednesday afternoon.

With the victory, the Quakers improve to 9-7 and have now won three in a row. The Mountain Hawks fall to 11-9 on the year.

Ben Miller led the offense with a 3-for-4 afternoon which included an RBI double to add the Penn insurance runs in the top of the 10th inning.

How It Happened
Penn took the first lead of the game with one out in the top of the first inning after Cole Palis walked and Ben Miller scored on a wild pitch, making it 1-0. The Quakers left runners on first and third in the inning.

John Cerwinski retired the first batter he faced on a fly out, but after back-to-back singles, a Gerard Sweeney sacrifice fly brought in the Mountain Hawks' first run of the game, tying it at 1-1.

Getting its first two batters at the plate on the bases via back-to-back walks against right-hander Tyler Thompson, the new pitcher set the Quakers down in order for the rest of the frame, coming out unscathed.

Cerwinski had a productive second inning, striking out the first batter he faced and got the final two outs on a fly out and a 1-6-3 double play.

Penn took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning on a one-out Nate Polo single up the middle, bringing in Davis Baker to score.

Marshall Mott took over in the bottom of the inning, retiring the first two batters on a GIDP and despite surrendering Lehigh's second run of the day, got Sweeney to line out to Palis to end the threat.

The Quakers were held scoreless after the top of the fourth inning and the Mountain Hawks re-claimed the lead, 3-2, on an RBI single. Lehigh left two runners on base following a trio of hits.

After an uneventful fifth inning, Penn left a runner on third base after Ryan Taylor reached on an error, stole second and got over to third base on a groundout.

Penn broke through in the top of the seventh to pull ahead, 4-3 after Miller got the inning started with a single up the middle. An RBI double for Palis tied the game at 3-3. With two away, Jarrett Pokrovsky singled to left field, bringing in Palis to take the lead.

Lehigh knotted the game up at 4-4 after Jake Whitlinger scored on an Edward Sarti wild pitch. Sarti retired the final two batters on a strikeout and a groundout, leaving two on base to end the seventh.

Both teams were held scoreless in the eighth inning as the Quakers retired the Lehigh side in the bottom of the inning on a 2-6 caught stealing and a strikeout for Will Tobin.

Penn was set down 1-2-3 to begin the ninth inning and two Mountain Hawks reached on singles following two straight outs, with a fly out to right field retiring the side, heading to extra innings.

Pokrovsky struck out to begin the 10th, but Polo singled through the right side and a Ryan Taylor triple laced to right center field brought home pinch runner Drew Rogers to give the Quakers a 5-4 lead with one out. Two more runs came across to score on a Seth Werchan sacrifice fly and a Miller RBI double, taking a 7-4 advantage into the bottom of the inning.

Coming in to close out the game, Carson Ozmer retired Andrew Kohl on a ground out to second base, striking out the final two batters swinging to end the game and pick up the save.
