PHILADELPHIA – On the heels of a remarkable final season for the University of Pennsylvania football team, senior defensive lineman
Joey Slackman was named the 2023 Dolph Schayes Outstanding Jewish Athlete of the Year, announced by the Jewish Sports Heritage Association.
After finishing second in the Ivy League in tackles for loss with 12.0 and adding an additional four sacks, Slackman was named Ivy Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-Ivy honoree for his performance.
At the end of last week, Slackman earned third-team All-America honors from Phil Steele.
"I am honored and grateful to receive this award," Slackman said in a statement. "My Jewish heritage is something that I am extremely proud of."
The Commack, N.Y. native concluded his strong Penn career with 115 total tackles on 56 solo stops, finishing with 25 tackles for loss (for 91 yards lost) and 11 sacks. He also had three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and a blocked field goal.
